We have always loved Rosamunde Pilcher's novels! Mention The Shell Seekers or September to any one of us and you will see a wistful gaze and hear a sigh...
The publisher has just released the first ever trade size edition of September! We think it's a wonderful time to feature two of our favorite Pilcher novels.
The Shell Seekers
Come meet Penelope Keeling and her three children as they and their relationships change over the course of Penelope's lifetime. Set in London and Cornwall between World War II and the present, Rosamunde's descriptive prose is so engaging - you can easily picture Penelope's garden and the Cornish landscape so clearly. This novel is timeless and if you are perhaps new to Rosamunde Pilcher, you will easily lose yourself in this story. $15.99
September This novel is set in Pilcher's beloved Scotland. The story is set around a birthday party with guests arriving from all over bringing all their varied dramas. Nobody writes cozy domestic stories as well as Rosamunde Pilcher - makes the reader want to "tidy up" and set out vases of flowers. $16.99

Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels:
"Relationships between women don't have solid rules like those between men," says the Italian author Elena Ferrante. "I was interested in recounting how a long friendship between two women could endure and survive in spite of good and bad feelings, dependence and rebellion, mutual support and betrayal."
It would be difficult to find a deeper portrait of women's friendship than the one in Ferrante's Neapolitan novels. This is a woman's story told with such truthfulness that it is not so much a life observed as it is felt.
We are such fans of these books and wanted to introduce them to you if you haven't read them yet.
Set against the backdrop of Naples, the novels tell the story of a lifelong friendship between Elena and Lila. The fourth and final novel in the series comes out September 2, so it's a perfect time to begin reading! $18.00 each
My Brilliant Friend My Brilliant Friend begins the story of two friends, Elena and Lila. It begins in the 1950s in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. Growing up on these tough streets, the two girls learn to rely on each other ahead of anyone or anything else.
The Story of a New Name The two protagonists are now in their 20s, and marriage appears to have imprisoned Lila. Meanwhile Elena continues her journey of self-discovery.
Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay In this third novel, Elena and Lila have become women. Lila married at sixteen and has a young son; she has left her husband and the comforts her marriage brought and now works as a common laborer. Elena has left the neighborhood, earned her college degree, and published a successful novel, all of which has opened the doors to a world of intellectual discourse and richly furnished salons.
The Story of the Lost Child Both women once fought to escape the neighborhood in which they grew up. Elena married, moved to Florence, started a family, and published several well-received books. In this final book, she has returned to Naples. Lila, on the other hand, never succeeded in freeing herself from the city of her birth. She has become a successful entrepreneur, but her success draws her closer into the nepotism and criminal violence that infect her neighborhood.
Such an unforgettable saga - readers will want to return to these books again and again! |

The Moonflower Vine by Jetta Carleton
Did you read this novel in the 1960s? If so, you almost certainly remember it - it's the type of novel that stays with you long after you finish it. Out of print for many years, it remained a cult favorite, and then gained notoriety when Jane Smiley included it on her reading list of 100 novels in her 2005 book, 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel. Happily, publishers took notice and reissued it.
Set on a farm in western Missouri during the first half of the twentieth century, Matthew and Callie Soames create a life for themselves and raised four headstrong daughters. Jessica will break their hearts. Leonie will fall in love with the wrong man. Mary Jo will escape to New York. And wild child Mathy's fate will be the family's greatest tragedy. Over the decades, they will love, deceive, comfort, forgive --- and, ultimately, they will come to cherish all the more fiercely the bonds of love that hold the family together. Reg. price $14.99, book club price $11.99

New Fiction:
The Nature of the Beast by Louise Penny
Penny's 11th mystery featuring beloved homicide detective Armand Gamache of the small village of Three Pines, deep in the woods of Quebec Province, is one of her very best. Combining her trademark elements of science, history, art, psychology, and the fabulous food of the Three Pines bistro, Penny weaves a tale that is haunting and unputdownable. If you haven't treated yourself to Louise Penny before now, The Nature of the Beast is an excellent place to start. Reg. price $27.99, our price $22.39
Did You Ever Have a Family? by Bill Clegg
Did You Ever Have a Family is a story that reveals humanity at its worst and best. At the book's heart is the idea of family - the ones we are born with and the ones we create - and the desire, in the face of everything, to go on living.
On the morning of her daughter's wedding, June Reid's house goes up in flames, destroying her entire family - her present, her past and her future.
The mystery of the tragedy is revealed through the voices of the characters. Each testimony has a new revelation about what led to the catastrophe - Luke's alienated mother Lydia, the watchful motel owners, their cleaner Cissy, the teenage pothead who lives nearby. Everyone touched by the tragedy finds themselves caught in the undertow, as their secret histories finally come to light. Reg. price $26.00, our price $20.80
Purity by Jonathan Franzen
Franzen's new novel is a multi-generational American epic that spans decades and continents. The story centers on a young woman named Purity Tyler, or Pip, who doesn't know who her father is and sets out to uncover his identity. The narrative stretches from contemporary America to South America to East Germany before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, and hinges on the mystery of Pip's family history and her relationship with a charismatic hacker and whistleblower. Reg. price $28.00, our price $22.40
The Girl in the Spider's Web; A Lisbeth Salander Novel, Continuing Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series By David Lagercrantz
This new installment in the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series was written not by Stieg Larsson (who died of a heart attack at the age of 50 in 2004), but by a Swedish journalist and author David Lagercrantz at the request of Stieg Larsson's estate. Salander and Blomkvist have survived intact and are just as compelling as ever. Fans of the immensely popular series will not be disappointed.
Reg. price $27.95, our price $22.36
Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart
From Karen: When I heard that best-selling non-fiction author Amy Stewart (Drunken Botanist), was trying her hand at fiction, I must say I was a bit trepidatious. But I am happy to say that the author has turned a true story from the early 1900's into an exciting and hilarious tale of three sisters who defied convention and threats by a local mobster. Her sense of language, fashion and the morals of the time are captured beautifully in this novel, and I look forward to what promises to be a witty and engaging return of amateur sleuth Constance Kopp!
Reg. price $27.00, our price $21.60
Above the Waterfall by Ron Rash
In this poetic and haunting tale set in contemporary Appalachia, author Ron Rash (Serena) illuminates lives shaped by violence and a powerful connection to the land.
Les, a longtime sheriff, is just weeks from retirement when he is forced to contend with the ravages of crystal meth and his own corruption in his small Appalachian town. Meanwhile, Becky, a park ranger with a harrowing past, finds solace amid the lyrical beauty of the North Carolina mountains. Gripping! Reg. price $26.99, our price $21.59
We Never Asked for Wings by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
From the author of staff favorite The Language of Flowers, this novel deals with immigration, motherhood, family, duty, and heartbreak.
Lisa Genova writes, "I was hooked from the first breathtaking pages..., caring about this exquisitely vulnerable family, hoping right along with them on every page that each heart-rending, impossible choice would lead them somewhere better together." Reg. price $27.00, our price $21.60
Fates and Furies by Lauren Goff
From Kathy: I loved this! Lauren Goff's earlier novels, The Monsters of Templeman and Arcadia were also favorites of mine. Fates and Furies is a dazzling examination of a marriage. We meet Lotto and Mathilde at age twenty-two. Tall, glamorous, madly in love, they are destined for greatness. The novel centers first on Lancelot "Lotto" Satterwhite, a dashing actor at Vassar, who marries his classmate, flounders, then becomes a famous playwright (the Fates). His wife, Mathilde, takes over the second section (the Furies). A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, although things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. I was riveted! Reg. price $27.95, our price $22.36 (available Sept. 15)
Everybody Rise by Stephanie Clifford
This debut novel by New York Times reporter Stephanie Clifford is being compared with the works of Edith Wharton and Tom Wolfe. Clifford's protagonist is 26-year-old Evelyn Beegan. Evelyn attended Sheffield, an elite boarding school, then relocated to New York City and took a job recruiting socialite movers and shakers for an exclusive social media start-up called People Like Us (PLU). It isn't long before Evelyn's focus is less about her career ambition and more about her personal ambition. "Let's hear it for the ladies who lunch - everybody rise!" (Stephen Sondheim)
Reg. price $26.99, our price $21.59

Non-fiction:
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
A laugh-out-loud account of an outrageously rugged hike--by the beloved comic author of Lost Continent and Notes from a Small Island. The movie comes out September 2 and stars Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. The movie looks like fun, but of course this classic book, which has been in print since 1998, is absolutely wonderful! Why not enjoy both? $15.99
Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar
When the San Jose mine collapsed outside of Copiapo, Chile, in August 2010, it trapped thirty-three miners beneath thousands of feet of rock for a record-breaking sixty-nine days. After the disaster, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Hector Tobar received exclusive access to the miners and their tales, and brings them hauntingly to life. We learn what it was like to be imprisoned inside a mountain, understand the horror of being slowly consumed by hunger, and experience the awe of working in such a place. A stirring testament to the power of the human spirit, Deep Down Dark captures the profound ways in which the lives of everyone involved in the catastrophe were forever changed. $16.00
Click here to listen to an NPR interview with Hector Tobar.
Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy by Karen Abbott
In the lively Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War, best-selling author Karen Abbott showcases four women who fought the war on their own terms. There were actually several hundred women on each side who disguised themselves as men and made it to the front lines. The four women described here used guile, charm, seduction and disguise. Two women fought for the Union and two for the Confederates. A fascinating look at some little known history! $16.99 (available Sept. 8)
Yes, Please by Amy Poehler
In her memoir, Amy Poehler describes her joyful struggles to make it to "Saturday Night Live" and to prime-time success. Of course that path involved years living in dumpy New York apartments and being perpetually broke. But what carried her through was her passion for comedy and a seemingly shatterproof belief that she would be successful.
Unlike so many memoir writers who air family grievances, Poehler has only wonderful, kind things to say about her parents and family. Poehler grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. $16.99

Children's Chapter Books
The Marvels by Brian Selznick
This amazing new book is by the author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck. The Marvels opens with a nearly 400-page wordless illustrated story before moving on to words. With his signature close-up, crosshatched pencil drawings, Selznick opens on a ship at sea, the Kraken, with a young girl tied to the mast and threatened by a vicious monster. Just in the nick of time, an angel appears, ready to save her, but a page turn later, we see that the whole scene is a play performed on the ship. This is a story of a theatrical family, the Marvels, and their fortunes. Complex, entertaining, full of gorgeous art and writing, this is a "marvel" of a book!
Reg. price $32.99; our price $26.39 (available Sept. 15)

Children's Nonfiction
The Boys in the Boat (Young Reader's Adaptation) Adapted from the adult best-seller, this quietly compelling story tells of the University of Washington rowing team that competed in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. While every race story is essentially the same, the accounts of these races are riveting. The main focus is Joe Rantz. Sent away at age 4 to live with relatives after his mother's death, and later turned out of his father's house again at age 10, Joe grew up working hard. He became physically strong and self-reliant, but the emotional hardship took its toll. Determined to make the rowing team in order to stay at the university, he ultimately gained much more from the experience than his initial goals of an education and economic security. The word teamwork doesn't adequately describe the connection shared by the men in that boat in 1936. Illustrated with vintage photos, this moving book offers young people a vivid sense of that shared experience. Ages 13 - 17 $17.99
In the Heart of the Sea (Young Reader's Adaptation)
In the Heart of the Sea, soon to be a major motion picture directed by Ron Howard, has been adapted by author Nathaniel Philbrick for young readers. On November 20, 1820, the whaleship Essex was rammed and sunk by an angry whale. Within minutes, the twenty-one-man crew, including the fourteen-year-old cabin boy Thomas Nickerson, found themselves stranded in three leaky boats in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with barely any supplies and little hope. Three months later, two of the boats were rescued 4,500 miles away, off the coast of South America. Of the twenty-one castaways, only eight survived, including young Thomas. These amazing events are recreated through the sailors' own first-hand accounts, photos, maps, and artwork. One of the great true-life adventure stories! Ages 8 - 12 $8.99
2016 Guinness Book of World Records The world's best-selling annual is back and bursting with thousands of amazing new records, never-before-seen images and mind-boggling trivia. Topics making their Guinness World Records debut include waterfalls, twins, ballooning, apps, lightning, manga, archaeology, drones, and pirates - and that's just for starters!
