Seven Year Pens!
Yes, we admit, we can get excited about pens! But in this case, we think you will be excited, too:

The Story Behind the Seven Year Pen:

Each year, an estimated 100 million pens are discarded every day. Yikes! Is all that waste really necessary?

Maybe not, answers the Seven Year Pen. It's not only possible to reduce waste, it's possible to look cool while doing it!

The Seltzer Company was introduced to a Swiss pen maker that reduces waste by increasing the size of the ink supply inside the pen. The writer may write 1.7 meters a day for 7 years. The shape of the Seven Year Pens is as svelte as anything you're used to writing with, yet it goes on and on.

There's no reason why being eco-friendly and being a design lover can't live happily together.

Mr. Owita's Guide to Gardening
by Carol Wall

All are welcome to join the discussion of this remarkable and moving memoir. We are very grateful that the author's husband, Dick Hall, will join our conversation by phone.

The subtitle of the book, "How I Learned the Unexpected Joys of a Green Thumb and an Open Heart", gives the reader a clue to the subject matter. It is the story of a friendship between two unlikely candidates - the author, Carol Wall, who is dealing with personal illness, aging parents and other changes in her life and Giles Owita, an immigrant from Kenya, who works at a local garden center.  Mr. Owita introduces Hall to the healing that can come from gardening. Over time they share their stories with each other and, when you finish this book, you are going to want to share it with others, too!

Mary Pat Kelly
Saturday, April 25
2-3pm

Join us in welcoming Mary Pat back to Titcomb's to talk about her wonderful new novel, Of Irish Blood.

Irish-American Nora Kelly, from Chicago, flees an abusive relationship, moving to Paris on the eve of World War I.  Her talents as a designer get her a job in a fashion house, sketching dresses and giving tours of the city to the house's wealthy clients. Soon she's hobnobbing with a Left Bank salon society of poets, intellectuals, and political activists. As the Great War looms and the battle for Irish independence intensifies, Nora's friends urge her to fight for her heritage.
This is a vivid and compelling story inspired by the life of Mary Pat's great-aunt.

Mary Pat Kelly lives in New York City. Her earlier book, Galway Bay, is a great staff favorite.

Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.  As an adult, Theo's own actions drag him increasingly toward disaster. $20.00

Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller

Alena by Rachael Pastan
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." Weren't we all in love with Daphne DuMaurier's Rebecca? Alena is an homage to Rebecca, but Pastan moves the story from a gloomy English mansion to an avant-garde Cape Cod art gallery. This is not just a takeoff;  Alena proves to be a suspenseful mystery on its own merits. Gothic intrigue set on Cape Cod? We're there! $16.00
Nonfiction:

Master Thieves
by Stephen Kurkjian
This book does not solve the mystery of one of the world's biggest art heists - the theft of $500 million worth of artwork from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. But it does offer a pretty good road map for the FBI to follow 25 years later and rewards readers with a compelling, well told story about Boston's criminal underbelly. $25.99

Hammer Head: The Making of a Carpenter by Nina MacLaughlin
Nina MacLaughlin worked at The Boston Phoenix for nearly a decade. She came to a point where she needed to try something else with her life. She answered an ad on Craigslist advertising for a carpenter's assistant with "women strongly encouraged to apply". This is a deep & thoughtful book about transformation - for anyone who has ever dreamed of changing tracks. Smart, spunky, funny - Nina combines memorable stories of her training with the history of tools and great descriptions of the work and where they work. What is it like to be a woman in a trade that is 99% male? $24.95

Words Without Music
by Philip Glass
Famed American composer Glass describes his involvement in the avant-garde music and art scenes in New York in the 1950s through the 1980s. Glass talks about the work he did to support his family during the decades he was unknown - he worked as a mover, a plumber, and a taxi driver, subsequently immersing himself in the craft of composing. This is a lively, absorbing read that makes Glass's rarefied cultural sphere wonderfully accessible. $29.95

Between You and Me; Confessions of a Comma Queen
by Mary Norris
Norris has been the copy editor for the New Yorker for over thirty years. She takes us on a delightful tour of the offices of The New Yorker, talks about the history of Noah Webster and his dictionary descendents, the city of Cleveland, and the hyphen in Moby-Dick. If you are fascinated by words and grammar, you will enjoy this entertaining and enlightening book!

Hissing Cousins; the Untold Story of Eleanor Roosevelt and Alice Roosevelt Longworth
These two women were first cousins, but polar opposites when it came to ideology. Born in 1884, they became fast friends at the age of three, playing together at Sagamore Hill, the Long Island estate of Teddy Roosevelt. He was Alice's father and Eleanor's uncle. While Teddy had a tortured relationship with Alice, whose mother had died giving birth to her, he freely proclaimed Eleanor to be his favorite niece. Maybe that's how the tiff got started.  Alice was the partier, while Eleanor was the serious one.  Each was a fascinating woman, and this is a very entertaining double biography. $28.95

Capturing Music; the Story of Notation by Thomas Forrest Kelly
Kelly, a brilliant professor of music at Harvard, turns his attention (and ours!) to the history of writing down music beginning as early as medieval times.  The book includes a wonderful CD of some of the music.
"Gorgeously illustrated... If you have ever wondered how a system of dots and lines in space came to express the arrangement of sounds in time, this engaging, chatty book explains how..." - Melinda Bargreen, Seattle Times  $45.00

The Lady in Gold by Anne Marie O'Connor
From Karen: This book is the fascinating story of turn-of-the-century Vienna which introduces the painter, Gustav Klimt, and the subject of his most famous painting, Adele Bloch-Bauer, and her friends and family.  The reader is taken on a journey with the painting and the family through both World Wars, and the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The Nazis stole many great works of art from private and public hands, including much of Klimt's work. The author tells how the family tried to get the "Lady in Gold" back from the government of Austria, who had taken ownership of it from the Nazis. A major motion picture based on this book (re-titled as Woman in Gold) is opening shortly, starring Helen Mirren as the niece of Adele, who fought the government of Austria to return the painting to the family. What a story!  $17.95 paperback

Gustav Klimt "The Kiss" puzzle $17.99
Children's Chapter Books -

The Penderwicks in Spring

Hurray!!  There's a new Penderwicks story!  We absolutely adore this series, the first of which was awarded the National Book Award.

In this newest book, springtime is finally arriving on Gardam Street, and there are surprises in store for each member of the family.

Some surprises are just wonderful, like neighbor Nick Geiger coming home from war. And some are ridiculous, like Batty's new dog-walking business. Batty is saving up her dog-walking money for an extra-special surprise for her family, which she plans to present on her upcoming birthday. But when some unwelcome surprises make themselves known, the best-laid plans fall apart.
Filled with all the heart, hilarity, and charm that has come to define this beloved clan, "The Penderwicks in Spring" is about fun and family and friends (and dogs), and what happens when you bring what's hidden into the bright light of the spring sun. $16.99 (ages 8-12)

The Tapper Twins Go to War (with each other)
This is a tale that all siblings can relate to. The characters are all very believable, such as the club of fashion obsessed girls (fembots) and the gang of football crazed boys (soccer idiots). The twins' babysitter is hopeless, yet kind, Ashley. She is sunny, thoughtful and doesn't take sides, which is a good counterpoint to the rest of the antics. An entertaining and often hilarious read for both boys and girls!  Available April 7 $13.99 (ages 8-12)

High Tide for Horseshoe Crabs

This is a great introduction to horseshoe crabs for younger readers and listeners.  Although set on the shores of Delaware Bay, it is appropriate for Cape Cod waters as well. At the back of the book is a more detailed explanation for older readers of the crab's life cycle and behavior, its part in the food web, its importance to humans, especially in medicines and medical devices, and a great list of suggestions for further exploration.

Young Adult

We All Looked Up by Tommy Wallach
From Vicky: This is a really beautifully written and gripping story about four high school seniors and how they face what might be the end of the world. An asteroid is heading towards Earth with a 66.6% chance of a catastrophic collision in two months.  As the entire world copes with the news, we live the impact through these four very different young adults.  Not just another apocalyptic novel, this book makes the reader think about the meaning of life and the choices we make. What would you do if you knew the world might end?  Powerful, raw, philosophical and at times even tender.
$17.99 (Ages 14 and up)

Cruel Summer by K.R.Conway
From the incredible Cape Cod young adult author of Undertow and Stormfront comes this much anticipated new novel!  Kian O'Reilly is flawless as a killer. Well-practiced in the art of making murder look like an accident, he is selfish, wealthy, and totally arrogant as a soul-stealing Mortis. But when he ends up stranded on Cape Cod with a stolen car and a dead drug dealer in the trunk, he thinks his luck couldn't get any worse.  That is, until Ana Lane shows up.
Cruel Summer is the prequel novella to Undertow, based on the story of Kian and Ana the summer they met. It is stand alone, but is better to be read after Undertow and Stormfront. K.R.Conway is one of our favorite local young adult authors, and we love recommending her books!! $12.95
