Readers and fans of The Bookman's Tale have been anticipating this novel and will not be disappointed.  Lovett draws on his extensive knowledge of the world of rare books and Jane Austen.  It is a literary mystery with a touch of romance told in two parts--Jane Austen and her older friend Richard Mansfield and the present day story of Sophie Collingwood.  Sophie's Uncle Bertram has instilled in her his love of rare books and reading.  After his death she goes to work in the shop of one of his favorite booksellers. New Paperback Fiction:

Ship of Brides by Jojo Moyes
A paperback original from one of our favorite authors (Me Before You), this novel of post World War II war brides was based on Jojo Moyes'  own grandmother.  In Sydney, Australia, four women join 650 other war brides on an extraordinary voyage to England-aboard HMS Victoria, which carries not just arms and aircraft, but a thousand naval officers. Rules are strictly enforced, but the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined despite the Navy's ironclad sanctions.
$16.00

The Martian by Andy Weir
From Kathy: I loved this book and I'm so happy it's in paperback! Mark Watney is a member of a crew on a mission to Mars. While there, a freak accident requires the crew to leave suddenly, leaving Watney behind, presumed dead. But it turns out that Watney is alive - and alone - on Mars. He is a botanist and a mechanical engineer, so he is able to "MacGyver" equipment together and plan his survival. We follow his often funny log entries as he tries to figure out how long he can survive until the next planned mission to Mars. We also get to know the NASA engineers on earth who are able to track him. The author, Andy Weir, is a software engineer and lifelong space nerd, who brings solid science to his novel. If you enjoy survival stories, if you are a science geek, or if you just love an exciting edge-of-your-seat yarn, you will love The Martian!  I also recommend this for young adult readers.  (Ridley Scott is producing the movie version, due out in Fall of 2015 and will star Matt Damon and Sean Bean.) $15.00

The Daring Ladies of Lowell by Kate Alcott
From Elizabeth S. : This is another great historical novel from the author of The Dressmaker.  The main character, Alice Barrow, leaves the farm to join the wave of independent ladies working in the mills of Lowell in 1832. The details of the working conditions in the mills are so well described you almost hear the noise of the mills while you are reading.   Alice's friendship with co-worker Lovey takes a whole new twist when Lovey goes missing and Alice is forced into a relationship with the mill owner's dashing son....Dashing and daring meet to make a good romance well as historical novel.   A great book from start to finish!  $15.00

Bark: Stories by Lorrie Moore

The public and private foolishness of American life in each of these stories combines both heartache and hilarious pitfalls: the hallmark of life in Lorrie-Moore-land. $15.00

Fields of Blood: Religion and the History of Violence by Karen Armstrong
Known for her books on comparative religion, author and commentator Karen Armstrong
goes to the heart of an urgent concern: is religion by its nature ultimately violent or is something else at work? A fascinating, provocative discussion, as always with this author. $30.00

No Hero: The Evolution of a Navy Seal by Mark Owen
No Hero, by former SEAL Mark Owen, (No Easy Day) offers a rare counterpoint: an account of Owen's most personally meaningful missions.
"I want "No Hero" to offer something most books on war don't: the intimate side of it, the personal struggles and hardships and what I learned from them," says Owen. "The stories in "No Hero" are a testament to my teammates and to all the other active and former SEALs who have dedicated their lives to freedom. In our community, we are constantly taught to mentor the younger generation and to pass the lessons and values we've learned on to others so that they can do the same for the guys coming up after them. This is what I hope I have done for readers of "No Hero." $27.95 (available November 10)

Yes Please by Amy Poehler
In her new memoir, Amy Poehler describes her joyful struggles to make it to "Saturday Night Live" and to prime-time success. Of course that path involved years living in dumpy New York apartments and being perpetually broke. But what carried her through was her passion for comedy and a seemingly shatterproof belief that she would be successful.
Unlike so many memoir writers who air family grievances, Poehler has only wonderful, kind things to say about her parents and younger brother Greg, who created and stars in the NBC sitcom "Welcome to Sweden." Poehler grew up in Newton, Massachusetts.  Enjoy her NPR interview! $28.99

New Paperback Nonfiction:

Provence, 1970 by Luke Barr
Author Luke Barr, great-nephew of M.F.K.Fisher, used Fisher's personal diaries to write this novelistic account of when Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher gathered together, somewhat by serendipity, in the fragrant hills of Provence. There, over a series of dinner parties (Barr naturally includes the menus), side trips, and sightseeing, the group discussed recipes, wine, their careers, and the state of food culture in France and the United States. $15.00 (available November 4)

Cchildrenhildren's Picture Books

Once Upon an Alphabet by Oliver Jeffers
Jeffers, illustrator of The Day the Crayons Quit, has written a story for each letter of the alphabet. The silly, spare, slightly surreal text sometimes rhymes and always surprises. Each letter and story title is introduced on a separate, colored page, featuring the letter in childlike lettering. Deceptively simple pen, ink and watercolor illustrations in subdued blacks and grays on white backgrounds add to the overall whimsy. An utterly delightful alphabet book! (ages 5-8) $26.99

Before After
Which came first? No words are necessary in this beautiful, artfully humorous book, in which every turn of the page offers a surprise.
Of course a tiny acorn grows into a mighty oak and a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. But in this clever, visually enchanting volume, it's also true that a cow can result in both a bottle of milk and a painting of a cow, and an ape in a jungle may become an urban King Kong.  With simple, graphic illustrations, this striking reflection on the passage of time will appeal to very young children and adults, too! $19.99

The Animals' Santa by Jan Brett
Lovely story with Jan Brett's beautifully detailed illustrations. When Big Snowshoe tells Little Snow that the animals' Santa is coming with presents for everyone, Little Snow wants to know who he is.
