Fiction:
The High Divide by Lin Enger
From Elizabeth M: The reader is drawn into this novel from the first page. It is a story of a troubled family in the American West in the late 1800's. Ulysses Pope leaves a note saying that he is going to find work, but he disappears and nobody ever hears from him. His wife Gretta and sons Eli and Danny follow his trail and begin to learn the secrets he was unable to share. This novel has tremendous character development and a strong sense of place. Author Lin Enger is the brother of Leif Enger, whose book, Peace Like a River was another favorite of mine! Reg. price $24.95, our price $20.00
The Children Act by Ian McEwan John Grisham's Review: The Children Act is about the law and sensational cases, but it is not a legal thriller. Rather, it is a beautiful and sad story of a High Court Judge forced to choose, literally, between life and death. Her ruling, though proper and legally sound, leads to both. Reg. price $25.00, our price $20.00 Gutenberg's Apprentice by Alix Christie This gorgeously written novel, set in the cathedral city of fifteenth-century Mainz, richly spins the tale of the creation of the Gutenberg Bible and the young scribe who was compelled to become an apprentice in Gutenberg's shop. If you are interested in book history or historical fiction, you will love Gutenberg's Apprentice! [From Vicky: I am so enjoying this book! The story is absolutely fascinating and I have learned so much about the development of printing and the impact of politics and church in 15th century Germany. This is an excellent read!] Reg. price $27.99, our price $22.40 Lila by Marilynne Robinson The third of Robinson's three novels set in the fictional Plains town of Gilead, Iowa, Lila tells the story of a young girl, homeless and alone amid the migrant camps in the 1920's. Neglected as a toddler, Lila is rescued by Doll, a canny young drifter who brings her up. When Lila arrives in Gilead, she meets Minister John Ames and her life changes again. If you have enjoyed the previous Gilead novels, you must read Lila! Reg. price $26.00, our price $20.80 Available October 7 Nora Webster by Colm Toibin Set in Wexford, Ireland, Colm Tóibín's wonderful novel introduces the formidable, memorable and deeply moving Nora Webster. Widowed at forty, with four children and not enough money, Nora has lost the love of her life, Maurice, the man who rescued her from the stifling world to which she was born. Wounded, strong-willed, clinging to secrecy in a tiny community where everyone knows your business, Nora is drowning in her own sorrow and blind to the suffering of her young sons, who have lost their father. A beautiful story that will capture your imagination. Reg. price $27.00, our price $21.60 Available October 7 Some Luck by Jane Smiley Each chapter in Some Luck covers a single year, beginning in 1920, as American soldiers return home from World War I, up through the early 1950s. The Langdon family branches out from Iowa to both coasts of America. Some Luck is the first of an intended trilogy. If you want to dig into a family saga, here's your chance! Reg. price $26.95, our price $21.56 Available October 7
New Fiction in Paperback Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman From Karen: Alice Hoffman's books are always great reads, full of life and magic. The setting is bustling Manhattan and sparkly Coney Island in the early 1900's. Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the sinister impresario of The Museum of Extraordinary Things, a Coney Island freak show that thrills the masses. An exceptional swimmer, Coralie appears as the Mermaid in her father's museum yet she is a veritable prisoner. Dashing photographer Eddie Cohen is a Russian immigrant who believes he can make a living with his camera. When Eddie photographs the devastation on the streets of New York following the infamous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, he becomes embroiled in the suspicious mystery behind a young woman's disappearance and ignites the heart of Coralie. I really loved this novel! $16.00
Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan From Kathy: From the author of Loving Frank, a staff favorite, this novel of historical fiction tells the story of Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife, Fanny. I found it compelling and quite fascinating, as I learned so much about Robert Louis Stevenson that I did not know, and I found his wife to be so interesting in her own right. Highly recommended! $16.00
A Star for Mrs. Blake
by April Smith Cora Blake never dreamed she'd go to Paris. She's hardly ever left the small fishing village where she grew up. Yet in the summer of 1931, she is invited to travel to France with hundreds of other Gold Star Mothers, courtesy of the U.S. government, to say goodbye to their fallen sons, American casualties of World War I who were buried overseas. Chaperoned by a dashing West Point officer, Cora's group includes the wife of an immigrant chicken farmer; a housemaid; a socialite; a former tennis star in precarious mental health; and dozens of other women from all over the country. Along the way, the women will forge lifelong friendships as they face a death, a scandal, and a secret revealed. $15.95
