Fiction:
Neverhome by Laird Hunt
From Elizabeth M: There is not a spare word in this beautifully written novel about a farmer's wife from Indiana who leaves her husband to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Her journey takes her through battles, hardships and relationships before her ultimate return to the farm. The reader will be drawn into the story immediately and at the end of the relatively short 256 pages will want to read it again! Reg. price $26.00, our price $20.80
Lisette's List by Susan Vreeland
From Elizabeth M: This novel (by the author of Clara and Mr. Tiffany, and The Girl in Hyacinth Blue) is perfect for readers who enjoy a good love story, tales of WWII, and art history. Andre and Lisette leave Paris for a village in Provence to care for Andre's grandfather, Pascal. A passionate collector of Impressionist paintings, Pascal shares his knowledge with the young couple. After his grandfather's death, Andre joins the army and hides the paintings so they won't fall into German hands. When Southern France is occupied, a German officer forces Lisette to reveal where they hid the paintings. It is a tale with a strong sense of place to be savored at a slow pace.
"Merveilleux! Vreeland's passionate writing is as good as a private showing at the Louvre." - Kirkus Reviews

An Event in Autumn
by Henning Mankell
From Kathy: If you were bereft at the end of the Wallander series, as I was, you will enjoy this small novel featuring our beloved Kurt Wallander. It is set during the time before The Troubled Man (the final novel), and is classic Mankell. Once again we visit with our moody confused Kurt. At first he thinks he's found his longed-for house in the country, but of course there's a body in the garden and a crime to solve. Mankell also includes a very interesting essay about how he came to write the character of Kurt Wallander and what he hoped to communicate through his detective. If you haven't yet read any of Mankell's books, especially his Wallander series, I suggest you get started! The first book is Faceless Killers. $14.95

O My America! Six Women and Their Second Acts in a New World by Sara Wheeler
From Kathy: I love this book! Such a fascinating portrait of 6 very different 19th century women who reinvented themselves in their later years - sound familiar? Often today, we think we're so "cutting edge" for carving out a new career or move in our 50s or 60s, don't we? This book is a great example of women throughout history who have had the strength, imagination, and courage to improve their lives no matter their age. $16.00

Edward Hopper Paints His World
by Robert Burleigh; illustrations by Wendell Minor
Full-color spreads and black and white sketches portray the artist from his youth to his old age in this wonderful picture-book biography. From the boyhood room in which Hopper paints a lone sailboat on the Hudson River to the country gas station he captures at dusk in his famous painting, Gas, the illustrations convey the solitary tone of Hopper's work. In many scenes, readers peer over Hopper's shoulder as he works, seeing what he sees. "Many houses in his paintings seem moody, quiet, and alone. Were Edward's houses a bit like Edward himself?" A few of Hopper's quotations about art are included in an afterword, along with reproductions of several well-known paintings. Ages 5-9. $17.99

Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child's soul as she searches for her place in the world.
