Mother Daughter Me
Book Talk
Wednesday, August 6

2:00-3:00 pm

In the summer of 2009 Katie Hafner's mother, Helen, moved from San Diego to San Francisco to live with Katie and her 16-year-old daughter, Zoe. Katie referred to their upcoming adventure as, "our year in Provence." What she found instead was that she was sandwiched squarely between her obligation to an aging parent, with whom she had a difficult past, and her responsibility for her own daughter.

By turns heartbreaking and funny, Mother Daughter Me is an insightful and loving book, so relevant to so many of us. Book price $16.00

Katie Hafner is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, where she writes on healthcare and technology. She lives in San Francisco.

About the book: On a bitter winter morning in 1676, the Puritan minister's wife, Mary Rowlandson, is captured by Indians.  Her home destroyed and her children lost to her,  she becomes a pawn in the bloody struggle between English settlers and the indigenous people. Battling cold, hunger, and exhaustion, she witnesses harrowing brutality but also unexpected kindness.  To her own surprise, she is drawn to her captors' straightforward way of life, and when the opportunity comes to be ransomed back to the English, she begins to wonder if she will ever fit into colonial society again.

Fiction:
A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman
From Elizabeth M:  Hooray!  A Man Called Ove is coming to America!  This first novel written by a Swedish blogger is a charming story.  You will come to love this cranky old man whose world is black and white.  He is a rule- follower who has no patience with people who are not. His tale unfolds when a new family moves into his neighborhood and accidently flattens his mailbox. Unlikely friendships are formed that produce laughter and tears.  At the end of the book you will want to share it with others.

Close Your Eyes Hold Hands by Chris Bohjalian

From Elizabeth S: Chris Bohjalian delivers a story that is raw, emotionally gripping and believable. We meet Emily Shepard six months after a nuclear meltdown in Vermont, living in a frozen, leaf filled trash bag igloo. She vows to tell the whole truth of how she ended up there. Orphaned by the disaster, she runs away when it appears her father, perhaps in a drunken state, is responsible for the nuclear meltdown.   Her only support during this time is the poetry of Emily Dickinson, in whom she finds a kindred spirit. By the bottom of page two, Emily will have you rooting for her - you will be unable to put the book down!
Reg. price $25.95, our price $20.76

The Hundred-Year House by Rebecca Makkai

When Doug's mother-in-law offers up the coach house at Laurelfield, her hundred-year-old estate north of Chicago, Doug and his wife Zee accept.  In her review for BookPage, Lauren Bufferd writes: ".. part archival mystery, part ghost story, part historical novel, starring a house with as much personality as Manderley or Hill House. Told in reverse chronology, it unfolds as a kind of bookish scavenger hunt, uncovering clues and putting pieces of the fictional puzzle in place."

A great read from the author of The Borrower

Reg. price $26.95, our price $21.56

Colorless Tsukuru and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami
A return to the sort of romantic fiction, more grounded in realism, that Murakami made famous in his 1987 novel, Norwegian Wood, set against the social realities of contemporary Japan. This is the story of Tsukuru Tazaki, a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences, and a journey into the past to mend the present.   Vintage Murakami!

A Colder War by Charles Cumming

A contemporary spy thriller in the vein of le Carre.

The Good Lord Bird by James McBride

From the bestselling author of The Color of Water and Song Yet Sung, this is the story of a young boy born a slave who joins John Brown's antislavery crusade--and who passes as a girl to survive. Nicknamed "Little Onion", he finds himself with Brown at the raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859.  Told with imagination, and McBride's eye for detail and character, The Good Lord Bird is both an adventure story and a moving exploration of identity.

Winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction

Ivan Doig brings back character Morrie Morgan from his best seller The Whistling Season. Set in 1920's Butte, Montana, Morrie Morgan is on his honeymoon when he learns he has inherited a mansion from his former boss. Of course it proves to be less windfall than money pit.  Butte is a town of miners who are trying to get out from under the hold of the ruthless Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Morrie becomes the editorialist for the "Thunder", the union newspaper going up against Anaconda.  Sweet Thunder is another great story set in the West: a noble press pursuing victory for the miners and Morrie Morgan struggling for his own personal happiness.

The Hundred-Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais

From Kathy: One of the best descriptions of this yummily satisfying novel is from the New York Times book review: "...it's Slumdog Millionaire meets Ratatouille." The title refers to the hundred-foot distance between a new Indian kitchen and a traditional French restaurant, and the wide gulf between the different points of view.  French cooking is described in wonderful detail as is Indian cooking, and we see the two cultures eventually learning to appreciate the other. The movie comes out this month with Helen Mirren, so read the book quickly and then go see the movie!

Nature's God: The Heretical Origins of the American Republic  by Matthew Stewart

From Kathy:  This is a fascinating book sure to spark much debate and discussion!  If you cringe when commentators describe the United States as a "Christian Country" , or feel a twinge when folks talk about "freedom of religion" , this book is for you!  Wonderfully researched and documented, Stewart is informative, and very readable.  Stunning quotes from Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine, Ethan Allen, and Thomas Young, the radicals who founded America, show how they wanted to liberate us not just from one king but from the tyranny of religion. Stewart is passionate about his subject, and he will pull you in with his persuasive argument about the founding principles of American government.

The Mockingbird Next Door: Life With Harper Lee by Marja Mills

The Mockingbird Next Door is a captivating look into the private life of the author of one of America's most treasured novels, To Kill a Mockingbird.  In 2001, journalist Marja Mills was sent by the Chicago Tribune to Alabama to interview Harper Lee.  To her surprise, Harper welcomed her into her life and that of her sister, Alice.  In 2004, Marja actually wound up renting the house next door to Harper, or Nell as her friends call her, and became part of her daily life for 18 months.
[Sadly, some controversy surfaced after the book was published wherein Harper Lee disavowed any permission to write about her life, a charge that was refuted by her sister.  The publisher stands behind Marja Mills, and regardless, The Mockingbird Next Door is a thoroughly interesting and insightful look at a treasured American author.]   $27.95

Boston Red Sox: Miracle at Fenway by Saul Wisnia, foreward by Dave Roberts

Before they became the 2013 World Champions, there was the season that broke the curse and started it all...

It had been eighty-six years since Boston last won a World Series. For members of the 2004 Red Sox roster, winning that October was one of the greatest experiences in their lives. For fans, the '04 team will always be remembered as the one that finally silenced the "1918" chants. Hundreds of articles and several books were written about the '04 season, but after ten years, here is a fresh perspective. A Red Sox fan since birth, having written about and worked alongside the team for his entire professional life, Saul Wisnia tells the story of 2004 as experienced by the people who lived it. His style is engaging; he writes with both insight and excitement.  A good pick for the sports lover, especially during this less than stellar baseball season!  $26.99

Homeroom Diaries by James Patterson

Best selling author Patterson has moved away from Middle School Territory with this new novel, a highly illustrated "diary fiction" story for teens. Margaret "Cuckoo" Clarke recently had a brief stay in a mental institution following an emotional breakdown, but she's turning over a new leaf with her "Operation Happiness." She's determined to beat the trials and tribulations of high school by writing and drawing in her diary. When life gets really tough, she works through her own moments of uncertainty through imaginary conversations with her favorite literary characters (Holden Caulfield, Nicki Minaj, Katniss and Peeta!) Teens looking for an approachable, fun book will find much to enjoy here.  $18.00
