Goodnight June by Sarah Jio                        June Andersen is successful, but unhappy. Unexpectedly, she is called to settle her great-aunt Ruby's estate, and has to decide  what to do with Bluebird Books, the children's bookstore Ruby founded in the 1940s.  Skilled at foreclosing on small, failing businesses, June plans to sell the store to a developer. But then she finds a stack of letters that reveal that Ruby was a dear friend of author Margaret Wise Brown and actually inspired the classic Goodnight Moon. June vows to fight to keep the bookstore.

This is a current favorite of many of us at the bookshop!  $16.00

Revolution Baby by Joanna Gruda
From Vicky:  This is a very readable, unusual story of a young Polish boy named Janek, who is abandoned by his Communist parents and raised by his aunt and uncle as if he were their biological child.  His estranged mother returns for him and takes him away to Paris where she works for the Resistance during World War II, leaving others to care for him, including an extraordinary socialist orphanage.  Inspired by the life of the author's father, this is a quirky, fascinating little book.  $16.00
The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
We've all raved about this delightful, laugh-out-loud funny, poignant love story! Don Tillman is a brilliant Australian geneticist with Asperger's Syndrome who decides that the most efficient and logical way to find a suitable wife is to screen prospective women with a highly detailed survey. However, he soon he finds himself falling in love with the totally unsuitable Rosie, a cigarette smoking, disorganized barmaid and student who is searching for her biological father.  We are so happy this book is finally in paperback: we all think you'll love this book as much as we did! $15.00

Time and Again by Jack Finney
From Elizabeth M:  Often at this time of the year, we like to call your attention to some of our old favorite books. One of my all time favorite books is Time and Again by Jack Finney. First published in 1970, this is considered one of the classic stories of time travel and fantasy. Advertising artist Si Morley is recruited by a government agency to be a part of a study looking at time travel. Through his eyes the reader is introduced to New York City in 1882. Old photographs and drawings add to the authenticity of the book and the reader is easily drawn into the mystery and romance of the story. Whether you are reading it for the first or the twentieth time, it is a tale to savor and enjoy!

Non-Fiction:

The French House; An American Family, a Ruined Maison, and the Village that Restored Them All by Don Wallace

When Francophiles Don and Mindy Wallace received an offer for a house on a tiny French island, they jumped at the chance, buying it almost sight unseen. What they found when they arrived was a building in ruin, and it wasn't long before their lives resembled it. Plagued by emergency repairs, a stock market crash, and very exasperated French neighbors, the Wallaces could have accepted their fate. Instead, they embraced it. The French House is a delightfully amusing and picturesque memoir about a family who seized life, rose from the rubble, and built themselves a home away from home.

$14.99 paperback

The Little Girl Who Fought the Great Depression: Shirley Temple and 1930s America by John F. Kasson

The Almost Fearless Hamilton Squidlegger by Timothy Basil Ering

The Thing About Luck by Cynthia Kadohata
From Vicky: Cynthia Kadohata, author of Kira-Kira, has written a gem! 12 year old Summer, a Japanese-American girl lives on a farm in Kansas. Her parents have just departed for Japan to take care of several elderly relatives. However, the mortgage must be paid and so Summer, her brother Jaz and their grandparents once again join a group of itinerant harvesters.  Life isn't easy - especially with her very strong-willed, traditional Japanese grandmother, whose stern but loving voice made me laugh out loud over and over again! Jaz has "issues" which are undoubtedly Asperger's Syndrome. It's fascinating to read how Summer and Jaz relate to one another and care about each other.  A wonderful discussion book! $7.99 in paperback.
The Great Greene Heist by Varian Johnson
This is an exciting page-turner set in middle school.  It's fast and funny, and Jackson Greene is a great character!  The kids in The Great Greene Heist are smart, authentic middle school kids who defy most of the usual stereotypes.  Athletic con artist Jackson is also a passionate member of the school's underfunded botany club. That pretty cheerleader the boys are swooning over? She's also a tech-club member who knows how to code.  This is a book we happily recommend for ages 10 - 14  $16.99

J.R.R. Tolkien -
Beowulf: A Translation and Commentary
(together with Sellic Spell)
edited by Christopher Tolkien
Beowulf was an inspiration for Tolkien, who was fascinated by the language and history. You can certainly see this influence when reading The Hobbit.
Tolkien wrote this translation in the 1920's, never intending it for publication. The commentary here is provided by Tolkien's son, Christopher, and is so interesting and informative, and contains many notes and personal observations.
Also included is "Sellic Spell," a simplified version of Beowulf, and two songs Tolkien wrote about Beowulf for his children in the 1930s.
Anyone studying Old English, or who is interested in Tolkien and his Fantasies will be in for a treat! $28.00
