Staff Reviews and New Releases
Adult Fiction
From Fran: The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls by Anton Di Sciagani A coming of age tale set in the south during the 1930's with horses! A definite trifecta win for this reader. This hot novel of the summer is sure to please lots of readers as they follow 15 year old Thea, a debutante who is exiled to an equestrian boarding school in the Blue Ridge Mountains after a family tragedy. Romance, mystery and injustices swirl through this timepiece about the rich and not so famous. You do not have to be horse crazy to enjoy this debut novel, but if you are it is a bonus! Just in case I haven't convinced you: it has been two months since I read this book and it still plays in my mind! List Price: $27.95 Our Price: $22.36
From Karen: The Last Summer of the Camperdowns by Elizabeth Kelly I really enjoyed this novel, which is set in Wellfleet in the 1970's. 12 year old Riddle is the product of acid tongued beautiful actress mother and her beloved father, a former composer, now running for political office. Tragedy strikes and only Riddle is aware of a crucial clue as she eavesdrops on adult conversations trying to sort truth from fiction. Love, lust, murder and well conceived characters make this a satisfying read. List Price: $25.95 Our Price: $20.76
From Elizabeth M.: Body and Soul by Frank Conroy This book is one of my all time favorites. First published twenty years ago, it is the only novel written by Conroy, who for many years until his death in 2005 was the director of the famed Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa. Set in the 40's, 50's and 60's in New York City, it is the rags to riches story of Claude Rawlings, a child prodigy who learns to play an old piano in his apartment by listening to the radio. Mentored first by the owner of a neighborhood music store, he overcomes hardships to become an accomplished composer and performer. $15.00
From Elizabeth M.: Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmore The title alone made me want to read and love this book! In 1912 Elspeth Dunn, a young poet living on the Isle of Skye receives a fan letter from David Graham, a college student in America. Thus begins a correspondence and a friendship which leads to love. The story of brothers and sisters and mothers and daughters spans two continents and two world wars and will hold your attention as only a well crafted epistolary novel can. Available July 9. List Price: $25.00 Our Price: $20.00
Eight Girls Taking Pictures by Whitney Otto A profoundly moving portrayal of the lives of women, imagining the thoughts and events that produced eight famous female photographers of the twentieth century. Inspired by the work of Imogen Cunningham, Madame Yevonde, Tina Modotti, Grete Stern, Lee Miller, Ruth Orkin, and others, author Whitney Otto weaves together eight stories, crisscrossing the world and a century to portray the tensions that defined the lives of female artists. These memorable characters seek the extraordinary through their art, yet also find meaning and reward in the ordinary tasks of motherhood, marriage, and domesticity. This is a bold, immersive, and unforgettable novel about women in love. $16.00
Adult Non-Fiction
JFK in Ireland by Ryan Tubridy For the first time ever, award-winning journalist Ryan Tubridy tells the fascinating story of the young, iconic President John F. Kennedy's only visit to Ireland. In this fully illustrated book, complete with never-before-seen photographs and heartwarming stories, Tubridy reveals the huge effect JFK's visit had on Ireland, and affection Kennedy felt for his fellow Irishmen and his Irish heritage. The Richest Woman in America: Hetty Green in the Gilded Age by Janet Wallach No woman in the Gilded Age made as much money as Hetty Green, America's first female tycoon. A strong woman who forged her own path, she was worth at least $100 million by the end of her life in 1916-equal to about $2.5 billion today. Green was mocked for her simple Quaker ways and her unfashionable frugality in an era of opulence and excess; the press even nicknamed her "The Witch of Wall Street." But those who knew her admired her wit and wisdom, and while financiers around her rose and fell as financial bubbles burst, she steadily amassed a fortune that supported businesses, churches, municipalities, and even the city of New York. Janet Wallach's engrossing biography reveals striking parallels between past financial crises and current recession woes, and speaks not only to history buffs but to today's investors, who just might learn a thing or two from Hetty Green. $16.95
The Read-Aloud Handbook: Seventh Edition by Jim Trelease Recommended by "Dear Abby" upon its first publication in 1982, millions of parents and educators have turned to Jim Trelease's beloved classic to help countless children become avid readers through reading aloud. This updated edition of The Read-Aloud Handbook has the latest research on reading (including the good and bad news on digital learning). Best of all, it has the most wonderful annotated list of books to read to children of all ages. $17.00
Elsewhere by Richard Russo After eight commanding works of fiction, the Pulitzer Prize winning author Richard Russo has turned to memoir in a hilarious, moving, and always surprising account of his life, his parents, and the upstate New York town they all struggled variously to escape. $15.00
The History of Food in 100 Recipes by William Sitwell We all love to eat, and most people have a favorite ingredient or dish. But how many of us know where our much-loved recipes come from, who invented them, and how they were originally cooked? In A HISTORY OF FOOD IN 100 RECIPES, culinary expert and BBC television personality William Sitwell explores the fascinating history of cuisine from the first cookbook to the first cupcake, from the invention of the sandwich to the rise of food television. A book you can read straight through and also use in the kitchen, A HISTORY OF FOOD IN 100 RECIPES is a perfect gift for any food lover who has ever wondered about the origins of the methods and recipes we now take for granted. $35.00

Clark the Shark by Bruce Hale Clark's enthusiasm for school, while admirable, is a little too much for his classmates. On its own, Clark's zeal wouldn't be so bad, but he is the largest and strongest student at his school, so his actions are more than a little intimidating to his smaller friends. He goes too fast during games of spinna-ma-jig, eats other kids' lunches and cannot seem to use an indoor voice. Eventually, his classmates stop playing, eating and sitting with him. His teacher, Mrs. Inkydink, helps him figure out what's wrong, but her advice to "stay cool" doesn't sink in--until Clark starts making rhymes to help himself remember. "Only munch your own lunch." "Easy does it, that's the way. Then my friends will let me play." His plan works, and everyone appreciates the new, improved, subdued Clark--especially the large new kid, who needs some help of his own. $17.99

From Vicky: Wolf Story by William McCleery Wolf Story is one of those very special books I've never forgotten since reading it years ago with my son. I'd learned about it because it was listed as one of Jim Trelease's favorite books to read aloud with children (see his newly updated book above). Originally printed in 1947, this book was recently reprinted by the New York Review Collection, which keeps very special children's books in print. Wolf Story is really a story within a story. As a father puts his son to bed, his son asks for a story about a wolf. The interplay between the father and the son is totally endearing, sweet and funny. You'll meet a hen named Rainbow, a boy named Jimmy Tractorwheel, and, of course, a wolf. Sweet, delightful memorable bedtime read aloud with lovely illustrations. Ages 5-8 $14.95 Hear more about this wonderful book on NPR by clicking here.
