poison ivy cynthia riggs Book Talk and Signing with Local Mystery Author
Cynthia Riggs

Poison Ivy
Sunday, June 23rd 1-2pm
Victoria Trumbull, is a feisty 92 year old who refuses to let the aches and pains of age stop her from enjoying life.  On her first day as adjunct professor of poetry at Martha's Vineyard's Ivy Green College, Trumbull realizes that the odor emanating from the lecture hall is not dead mice but something far more sinister. Before the week is out, Brownie, the groundskeeper's mangy mutt, unearths a second body buried beneath the lush poison ivy vine that covers the east wall of the administration building. A faculty advisor steals a student's thesis, a professor is held captive aboard a yacht, and Victoria and Brownie, a one-in-a-thousand natural corpse sniffing canine, team up to find a serial killer.

Cynthia Riggs was educated as a geologist.  She taught at the Annapolis Sailing School, lived on a 44-foot houseboat for 12 years while running the Chesapeake Bay Ferry Boat Company and was a rigger at Martha's Vineyard Shipyard.  In her late 60s, she earned an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College and has, in each ensuing year, produced one of her Vineyard-based, Victoria Trumbull mysteries.

art forger Barbara Shaprio Book Talk and Signing with B.A. Shapiro
The Art Forger
Saturday, June 29th 1-2pm
Ask any staff member at the book shop to name a favorite book for 2013 and they will say The Art Forger!!!  We are honored to have Barbara Shapiro join us to discuss this engrossing read!

In 1990, thirteen works of art were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.  The theft remains the largest unsolved art heist in history, and in Shapiro's novel, Claire Roth, a struggling young artist, is about to discover that there's more to this crime than meets the eye.  Claire makes her living reproducing famous works of art for a popular online retailer. Desperate to improve her situation, she lets herself be lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting--one of the Degas masterpieces stolen from the Gardner Museum--in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But  Claire soon begins to suspect that the painting may itself be a forgery. Shapiro's razor-sharp writing and rich plot twists make The Art Forger an absorbing literary thriller about seeing--and not seeing--the secrets that lie beneath the canvas.

Barbara Shapiro is the author of four other novels and has been called a "master of mystery" by the Boston Globe. A sociologist who specializes in criminology and deviant behavior, she lives outside of Boston with her husband and two young children.

black country From Karen:  The Black Country (Scotland Yard's Murder Squad) by Alex Grecian  In the Black Country of the Midlands, in a dark village called Blackhampton, a plague-like illness is affecting hundreds of townspeople. Scotland Yard inspector Walter Day has been called in from London along with his assistant, Nevil Hammersmith, to investigate the disappearance of a couple, Sutton and Hester Price, and their young son, Oliver. The Prices leave three more children behind--Peter, Anna and Virginia--all of them precocious and creepy.  We are introduced to mysterious characters, such as 'The American,' a terrifyingly maimed Civil War vet with a hidden agenda, and a bird-watcher who seems to be hiding something from his past. This is a fun historical mystery where decrepit village buildings slowly sink below the earth which has been riddled with coal mining tunnels, children find eyeballs in bird's nests, and no one is who they seem to be at first glance. supremes at earls From Fran:  The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore
I cannot believe that The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat missed my "bookdar" (book radar) until recently. What an enjoyable read! Think Whoopie Goldberg meets Fannie Flagg kind of entertainment.  I laughed, I cried, and I laughed and cried at the same time! The story starts during the racially charged 1960s and tells the story of three black teenage girls in small town Indiana.  The trio, self proclaimed as the "The Supremes," meets weekly at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat to rehash and reevaluate the nitty gritty of life.  You will be thoroughly entertained and invested as you travel the twists and turns of their lives.  I am so thrilled I didn't miss Mr. Moore's debut novel and anxiously await his next one.

The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls silver star
The author of The Glass Castle is back with her first novel! It is 1970 in a small town in California. "Bean" Holladay is twelve and her sister, Liz, is fifteen when their artistic mother, Charlotte, a woman who "found something wrong with every place she ever lived," takes off to find herself, leaving her girls enough money to last a month or two. When Bean returns from school one day and sees a police car outside the house, she and Liz decide to take the bus to Virginia, where their Uncle Tinsley lives in the decaying mansion that's been in Charlotte's family for generations.  An impetuous optimist, Bean soon discovers who her father was, and hears many stories about why their mother left Virginia in the first place. Because money is tight, Liz and Bean start babysitting and doing office work for Jerry Maddox, foreman of the mill in town--a big man who bullies his workers, his tenants, his children, and his wife. Bean adores her whip-smart older sister--inventor of word games, reader of Edgar Allan Poe, nonconformist. But when school starts in the fall, it's Bean who easily adjusts and makes friends, and Liz who becomes increasingly withdrawn. And then something happens to Liz.  Available June 11.  List Price:  $26.00  On Sale:  $20.80

From Vicky: This is one of those very special books I cannot stop thinking about.  Beautifully written, it is the story of one little girl's experience in foster care.  Carley is a young girl who needs a home while her mother recuperates from an abusive boyfriend.  Carley is distrustful, frightened and hurt.  She is taken in by a family with three rambunctious young boys - the Murphys. Slowly, Carley finds her way into their lives and hearts - and she begins to open her heart to them.  The book is so moving and so insightful.  The issues of abuse are handled sensitively through a child's eyes and there is so much to talk about!   Ages 10 and up.  $6.99

Paperboy by Vince Vawter paperboy
From Vicky: This is a fascinating book about an 11-year-old boy in 1959 Memphis who takes over his best friend's newspaper route for the month of July.  His biggest fear is that he will have to talk to the people on the route - and stuttering makes it almost impossible for him to speak.  He meets the people on the route and discovers friendship, sorrow, loneliness among his customers.  When a local junkman steals his precious pocket knife, the boy faces dangers that threaten his life - and the life of his family's beloved housekeeper. The book shows Memphis in the days of segregation through the eyes of a child.  The characters are true to life and the reader will learn a lot about what it is like to have problems communicating.  Ages 10 and up. $16.99

Thing about Luck by Cynthia Kadohata thing about luck
From Vicky: Once again, Cynthia Kadohata, author of Kira-Kira, has written a gem! 12 year old Summer, a Japanese-American girl lives on a farm in Kansas. Her parents have just departed for Japan to take care of several elderly relatives. (Don't all the best children's literature get rid of the parents right off the bat??) However, the mortgage must be paid and so Summer, her brother Jaz and their grandparents once again join a group of itinerant harvesters to earn money to keep their farm.

Summer works hard to help her family in a year without much luck.  She's growing up and life isn't easy - especially with her very strong-willed, traditional Japanese grandmother, whose stern but loving voice made me laugh out loud over and over again! Jaz has "issues" which are undoubtedly Asperger's Syndrome. It's fascinating to read how Summer and Jaz relate to one another and care about each other.  Brilliantly told with memorable characters realistically portrayed, the book is both inspiring, funny and heartbreaking. This would make a wonderful discussion book!
