A Good American by Alex George
The life of an immigrant family in America comes vividly to life in this epic and totally engrossing novel.  In 1904 Germany, Frederick and Jette flee Jette's disapproving mother and go to America, the land of opportunity.  Originally set to board a boat to New York, at the last minute, they take one destined for New Orleans  ("What's the difference? They're both new"), and find themselves, more by chance than by design, in the small town of Beatrice, Missouri. Not speaking a word of English, they embark on their new life together.  Beatrice is populated with unforgettable characters: a jazz trumpeter from the Big Easy who cooks a mean gumbo, a teenage boy trapped in the body of a giant, a pretty schoolteacher who helps the young men in town learn about a lot more than just music.  Heartbreaking, funny and insightful, this is a book to savor.  List Price:  $16.00  Our Price:  $12.80

Rifleman:  The Untold Story of Stevie Flemmi, Whitey Bulger's Partner
Saturday, June 1st 2-4pm

Stevie "the Rifleman" Flemmi was, for forty years, one of the most feared gangsters in Boston, and for much of that time, he was the partner of Whitey Bulger, the sixteen-year fugitive with a $2 million reward on his head who was captured in 2011. Flemmi has been convicted of ten murders and took the Fifth Amendment when asked about ten others. His cohort, Bulger, is charged with nineteen more. Rifleman is the story of Flemmi's life of crime, as told to federal and state law enforcement after he pleaded guilty in 2003. $25.99

Howie Carr, host of a hugely popular daily syndicated radio program, is the author of The Brothers Bulger, Hitman, and Hard Knocks. Before Bulger fled in 1994, Carr was such an implacable foe of the serial killing gangster that Whitey tried to kill him as he left his house in suburban Boston--an incident reported in 2006 on 60 Minutes. Whitey's younger brother, Billy Bulger, then the president of the Massachusetts State Senate, publicly referred to Carr as "the savage." Carr is a member of the national Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago. He won a National Magazine Award in 1985 for essays and criticism in "Boston" magazine.

Adult Non-Fiction

bunkerhill Bunker Hill by Nathanial Philbrick
Hurray!!  A new book by the brilliant and talented Nantucket historian Nat Philbrick is cause for celebration!  In 1775, Boston is occupied by British troops after a series of incidents, including the Boston Tea Party, by patriots who range from sober citizens to thuggish vigilantes. On April 19, violence finally erupts at Lexington and Concord.  In June, skirmishes give way to outright war in the Battle of Bunker Hill. It would be the bloodiest battle of the Revolution to come, and the point of no return for the rebellious colonists.

Philbrick brings a fresh perspective to every aspect of the story. He finds new characters, and new facets to familiar ones. The real work of choreographing rebellion falls to a 33 year old physician named Joseph Warren who emerges as the leader of the Patriot cause and who dies at Bunker Hill. Others in the cast include Paul Revere, Warren's fianc the poet Mercy Scollay, a newly recruited George Washington, the reluctant British combatant General Thomas Gage and his more bellicose successor William Howe, who leads the three charges at Bunker Hill and presides over the claustrophobic cauldron of a city under siege as both sides play a nervy game of brinkmanship for control.   List price: $32.95; our price: $26.36

[Nat will be speaking at the Barnstable Comedy Club on Thursday, August 8 at 6:00.  Sponsored by Tales of Cape Cod. Watch for more information in our newsletter.]

13 story treehouse The 13-Story Treehouse by Andy Griffiths
From Elisa and Jacob: Andy and Terry live in a treehouse. But it's not just any old treehouse, it's the most amazing treehouse in the world! This treehouse has 13 stories, a bowling alley, a see-through swimming pool, a secret underground laboratory, and a marshmallow machine.  "The 13-Story Treehouse is my favorite book because it helps me imagine the best treehouse ever.  I love the drawings and the silly stories."  Jacob Sullivan
Ages 8 - 12.  $13.99

the laura line The Laura Line by Crystal Allen
From Vicky: Laura is an overweight 7th grade black girl with a ton of sassy attitude.  Laura's best friend, Sage, is also overweight, and both girls are teased by their classmates.  They rise above it as best they can, and Laura takes out her frustrations by pitching baseballs in the woods near her grandmother's house.

When Laura's teacher decides to take a class trip to visit a slave shack on her grandmother's property, Laura is desperate to stop the trip, fearing even more humiliation from classmates as her "shameful" link to slavery is opened to them.  Eventually, she enters the shack and discovers that it holds the proud history of many generations of strong and independent Lauras in her family going back to the first Laura who was a slave.
A thoughtful, funny and affirming book, this is a wonderful choice for ages 8-12.  $16.99

hero on a bicycle Hero on a Bicycle by Shirley Hughes
From Vicky: I've adored Shirley Hughes' picture books, so I couldn't wait to read Hero on a Bicycle, her first children's novel.  It is a gripping story of 13 year old Paolo, who lives in Nazi occupied Florence, Italy in 1944.  Life is hard and Paolo longs to fight, but he is too young.  His father is in hiding with the resistance, and Paolo is left at home with his mother, who was born in England, and his sister.  Bored, he sneaks out of the house at night to ride his bicycle and dreams of joining the resistance.   One night, he is stopped and given a message from the resistance, asking the family to harbor several escaped Allied prisoners of war.   The family must work together to save the prisoners from recapture by the Nazis, and Paolo plays a key role.   The book is based on a true story, as Shirley Hughes relates at the beginning of the book.  I think this will be a great read for boys and girls who love historical fiction and WWII survival stories.  $15.99

Young Adult

5thwave The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey
From Vicky:  Wow!  This is an utterly compelling page-turner!  Aliens have invaded the Earth and the few remaining humans are scattered and frightened.  The aliens can grow within human bodies, so it's impossible to tell a potential friend from a deadly enemy.  Cassie is one of the few survivors of the 4th Wave of attack, and she's searching for her 5 year old brother.  Wounded on a lonely road, she is rescued by the handsome and caring Evan Walker. But should she trust him?  The book is quite violent, but will be a great choice for reluctant and avid readers alike who enjoyed books such as The Hunger Games.  Ages 14-17.  Available May 7th.  $18.99

code name verity Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
From Vicky:  I'm still shaken from reading this book about a young woman who flies into Nazi occupied France and is caught and tortured by the Gestapo for being a spy.  She is forced to write a confession to lessen her torture and hopefully earn a "clean" death.  As we read her confession, we learn of her training and friendship with a girl who would eventually fly into France.  The woman's voice is incredible, the story so brutal and real.  This is a powerful story of friendship amidst the all too real horrors of war.  A Michael L. Printz Award Honor book for ages 15 up.  Available May 7th.  $9.99 in paperback
