Small Business Saturday
November 24th
We love small business and we ARE a small business. American Express's Shop Small program was a huge success last year thanks to you! We want to encourage you all to keep "shopping small". It really makes a difference in your community. Did you know when you spend $100 in a local store $73.00 stays in your community? When you spend the same amount in a non local store only about $43.00 stays. We think that is one of many great reasons to shop local!

This absorbing debut is grounded in the real-life theft of 13 artworks from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston that would today be worth $500 million. Eager young artist Claire Roth supports herself by making reproductions of classic paintings. Promised a one-woman show, she agrees to forge a painting that turns out to be one of the stolen Gardner works.

Home from the war, wealthy Harry Copeland encounters heiress and aspiring actress Catherine Thomas Hale on the Staten Island ferry, and a great passion is born. Unfortunately, Catherine is engaged to a much older man, but she and Harry pursue a romance against an expansive backdrop of Broadway theaters, Long Island mansions, the mob and anti-Semitism.

From Karen: Magnificence: A Novel by Lydia Millet Susan is a serial adulterer whose life is shattered by her husband's sudden death. As she struggles to maintain a healthy relationship with her grown, paraplegic daughter, she unexpectedly inherits a mansion from a distant relative who had filled the magnificent house with stuffed and mounted animals from around the world. The novel explores the many forms that loss can take -- a loved one's death when it is too late to make amends; a daughter's loss of a life filled with possibilities if not for her accident; the slow deterioration of personality in the elderly with dementia; and the loss of animals in the wild to extinction. At once funny and touching.

Staff Reviews, Recommendations and New Releases Continued
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver
A new book by Barbara Kingsolver is a cause for celebration!!! Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at seventeen. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she has settled for permanent disappointment but seeks momentary escape through an obsessive flirtation with a younger man.
On her way to a rendezvous with him, she is waylaid by the sight of a forest ablaze with millions of butterflies. Their usual migratory route has been disrupted, and what looks to be a stunningly beautiful view is really an ominous sign, for the Appalachian winter could prove to be the demise of the species. The phenomenon draws the whole world to Dellarobia's doorstep - scientists, the media, religious leaders, neighbors and hordes of tourists. It also gives her new and galvanizing insight into our changing climate and her own poverty-stricken life on the sheep farm of her disapproving in-laws.

From Rita: Red Hook Road by Ayelet WaldmanRed Hook Road is about two families drawn together by the marriage of their children and the tragedy that occurs after they are wed. It is told over a period of four summers in Maine. One of the families visits for the summer from Manhattan; the other family is from Maine. The differences between these twofamilies emerge through the four summers as each character handles the tragedy. The mothers of the bride and groom play a strong role in the story as they both have strong and controlling personalities. This is a thoughtfully written book on families and friends dealing with their emotions and trying to carry on after the death of a loved one. Although one may say the subject was heavy, the author wrote in a sensitive manner that was not overbearing. $15.00
The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson
A reluctant centenarian much like Forrest Gump (if Gump were an explosives expert with a fondness for vodka) decides it's not too late to start over... After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some unpleasant criminals, a friendly hot-dog stand operator, and an elephant (not to mention a death by elephant). $15.99
The Stockholm Octavo by Karen Engelmann Life is close to perfect for Emil Larsson, a self-satisfied bureaucrat in the Office of Customs and Excise in 1791 Stockholm. He is a true man of the Town--a drinker, card player, and contented bachelor--until one evening when Mrs. Sofia Sparrow, a fortune-teller and proprietor of an exclusive gaming parlor, shares with him a vision she has had: a golden path that will lead him to love and connection. She lays an Octavo for him, a spread of eight cards that augur the eight individuals who can help him realize this vision--if he can find them.

Lila, a doctor and an expectant mother, is shattered by the spread of violence and infection, but continues to plan for her child's arrival even as society dissolves around her. Kittridge, known to the world as "Last Stand in Denver," has been forced to flee his stronghold and is now on the road, dodging the infected, armed but alone and well aware that a tank of gas will get him only so far. April is a teenager fighting to guide her little brother safely through a landscape of death and ruin. These three will learn that they have not been fully abandoned--and that in connection lies hope, even on the darkest of nights.

Non-Fiction
From Elizabeth: Elsewhere: A Memoir by Richard Russo
After writing eight works of fiction, this successful author returns to the small upstate New York town of Gloversville to write his own story and the reader will recognize the source of a number of his fictional characters. Russo lived with his mother, who was determined her son would move out into the world...and that she would go with him. They begin this journey with a very funny road trip in a very temperamental car to Arizona where Russo attended college. Written with acutely beautiful honesty, you will marvel at his patience with his often difficult mother. This is a must read for all Russo fans. $25.95
From Vicky: A Thousand Mornings: Poems by Mary Oliver
Mary Oliver is an extraordinary poet - and here on Cape Cod, we feel she is "our" poet. Her poetry is deeply rooted on the Cape and finds inspiration from the ocean, the beaches, the plants, birds and animals she - and we - encounter every day. Winner of both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, her work is deceptively simple. But in its simplicity is the power to move our hearts or make us laugh or, perhaps, to catch our breath in surprise or delight or empathy. In her poem "Hurricane," for example, she looks at trees damaged by a hurricane and their reblossoming after the storm. Brilliantly, she compares this with the emotional hurricane of personal tragedy and the hope for a similar reblossoming after the storm subsides. In "Hum, Hum" she reveals that she was abused by her father as a child. The revelation, so understated, catches the reader by surprise; the emotions so real and the words so revealing. $24.95
***We are very excited to have a limited number of signed copies of A Thousand Mornings!
Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power by Jon Meacham
Thomas Jefferson hated confrontation, and yet his understanding of power and of human nature enabled him to move men and to marshal ideas, to learn from his mistakes, and to prevail. Passionate about many things--women, his family, books, science, architecture, gardens, friends, Monticello, and Paris--Jefferson loved America most, and he strove over and over again, despite fierce opposition, to realize his vision: the creation, survival, and success of popular government in America. Jon Meacham lets us see Jefferson's world as Jefferson himself saw it, and to appreciate how Jefferson found the means to endure and win in the face of rife partisan division, economic uncertainty, and external threat. $35.00
From Vicky: Travels with Epicurus: a Journey to a Greek Island in Search of a Fulfilled Life by Daniel Klein
How should we go into old age? Should we fight it and strive, by whatever means, to stay forever young? Or should we be content to relax and enjoy the fruits of our life's labors and long time relationships? Philosopher and humorist Daniel Klein, co-author of the wonderful Plato and a Platypus Go to a Bar and other books on philosophy through jokes, takes a very personal look at this stage of life after career and before "old old age." Armed with a suitcase full of philosophy books, he headed to an island in Greece to think about his own personal philosophy of old age. There, he joins a circle of retired Greek men, whose contented lives and philosophies he comes to love and admire. This is an insightful, warm, funny and thought provoking view of at what it means to grow old. And it's also a great picture of life on a Greek island, too! $20.00
Cookbooks
From Elisa: Barefoot Contessa: Foolproof by Ina Garten
Ina Garten is the secret to my success in the kitchen and entertaining alike. I know that when I choose one of her recipes, I can't go wrong, so I go to her again and again. I currently own four of the Barefoot Contessa cookbooks and have found my fifth in Foolproof. Ina defines "foolproof" as the term applied to dishes that stand the test of time, reliable ones she makes again and again. All of us have "go-to" recipes we know make us shine in the kitchen, but the difference is Ina's recipes will make you sparkle, shine and shimmy because they are just that good! My favorites so far are crispy mustard-roasted chicken (perfect, easy and delicious!), easy tzatziki with feta (a great alternative to hummus!), and mussels with saffron mayonnaise. Along with wonderful "foolproof" recipes, Ina shares a multitude of tips and tricks that will save you in the kitchen and when entertaining! $35.00
From Elisa: The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook by Deb PerelmanThe long-awaited cookbook by Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen--home cook, photographer, and celebrated food blogger. Deb Perelman loves to cook, but cooking in her tiny Manhattan kitchen was, at least at first, only for special occasions--and, too often, an unnecessarily daunting venture. Deb found herself overwhelmed by the number of recipes available to her, so she founded her award-winning blog, Smitten Kitchen, on the premise that cooking should be a pleasure, and that the results of your labor can--and should--be delicious every time. Deb is a firm believer that there are no bad cooks, just bad recipes. She has dedicated herself to creating and finding the best of the best and adapting the recipes for the everyday cook. $35.00
Cooking the Catch Two by Dave "Pops" Masch
On The Water Magazine's Cooking The Catch columnist Dave Masch is a man well-versed in all things salty, and in this unique cookbook he shares his lifelong tales from the sea, his knowledge of capturing and cleaning the catch, and most importantly, his collection of tried and true recipes. This second volume in the Cooking The Catch series follows the rhythm of the seasons, month by month, providing classic recipes and creative new ways to enjoy the East Coast's bounty of local, seasonal seafood, whether procured from the sea or purchased from the local fishmonger. $25.00
Children's Books
From Vicky: Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende and Harry Devlin
Hurray! Cranberry Thanksgiving is back in print! This delightful picture book from the 1970s tells the story of Maggie and her grandmother, who live in an old house in New England beside a cranberry bog. Their old fashioned Thanksgiving dinner includes Maggie's grandmother's famous cranberry bread, whose recipe is kept secret. When Maggie invites her friend Mr. Whiskers to join them, grandmother worries he's just out to get her recipe. Is Mr. Whiskers really a recipe stealer? $18.95
You can find Grandmother's recipe on the back of the book. And we'll be serving pieces of her cranberry bread on Thursday, November 8. Come on in and try some!
From Elisa (and Jacob): If You Spent a Day With Thoreau at Walden Pond by Robert Burleigh, Paintings by Wendell Minor I can't think of a better way to introduce Thoreau to a child. My son Jacob read the book to me and afterwards we talked about people we know locally who are naturalists like Thoreau and how lucky we are to live on Cape Cod and enjoy similar quiet beauty discussed in the book. Jacob said that it is a very peaceful and quiet book and it made him think more aboutnature and small things. The illustrations are stunning. This is a children's picture book for all ages, which can be handed down generation to generation. $17.99 Diary of a Wimpy Kid #7 The Third Wheel by Jeff KinneyThe day many children have been waiting for is coming on November 13th when the latest book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, The Third Wheel, hits the shelves. Love is in the air--but what does that mean for Greg Heffley? A Valentine's Day dance at Greg's middle school has turned his world upside down. As Greg scrambles to find a date, he's worried he'll be left out in the cold on the big night. His best friend, Rowley, doesn't have any prospects either, but that's a small consolation. An unexpected twist gives Greg a partner for the dance and leaves Rowley the odd man out. But a lot can happen in one night, and in the end, you never know who's going to be lucky in love. $13.95

Game Changer by Margaret Peterson Haddix Athletics are everything for eighth-grader KT Sutton. She's a softball star, and she's on track to get a college scholarship and achieve international fame. Then one day during a championship game--in the middle of an important play--she suddenly blacks out. When she wakes up, she's in a different world. One where school is class after class of athletic drills, and after-school sports are replaced by popular academic competitions. One where KT is despised for her talent, and where her parents are fixated on her brother's future mathletics career rather than KT's softball hopes. KT is desperate to get back to reality as she knew it, but bits and pieces of disturbing memories and dreams make her wonder if something truly awful happened there. What if she's lost something a lot more important than a softball game? $16.99
Son by Lois LowryThey called her Water Claire. When she washed up on their shore, no one knew that she came from a society where emotions and colors didn't exist. What was his name? Was he even alive? She was supposed to forget him, but that was impossible. Now Claire will stop at nothing to find her child, even if it means making an unimaginable sacrifice.
