Toaster has responded beautifully to Name Game, Touch and Sit, but we are most encouraged by how well Find It and Look are working when walking on leash. We have had multiple opportunities to incorporate these lessons. As soon as she hears the clicker for Look, she immediately turns to get her treat. Find It has been equally effective. Additionally, we had an unexpected house guest this past weekend, and by using the tools we worked on for your visit, Toaster was able to accept another person in the house, without becoming frantic or overly upset. Finally, this past Sunday, we were able to take her with us for a day's outing. She had a few moments, but overall, she behaved wonderfully. We still have some work to do with loose leash walking and the two step game, but she is doing so much better with the pulling and heeling.
We are very grateful for the training you provided. I am confident we, and Toaster, will continue to progress. I suspect we will be participating in Levels training after the holidays.

Dog Training News...
We'd like to welcome our newest Dog Training Assistant, Karen Baragona. Karen is an avid volunteer at the Arlington and Alexandria shelters, and previously employed at the National Zoo, World Wildlife Fund, and holds a Master's Degree in environmental science. Karen began in our Fur-Get Me Not Apprentice Training Program back in January. She successfully completed the coursework, volunteer hours, and shadowing of our lead trainers. She officially completed the apprentice program and will begin assisting in our classes on Thursdays beginning January 2013. Learn more about her in her bio here. The 2013 Winter schedule is now available online and registrations are trickling in. Come January we will have 21 classes a week for you to choose from, the most we have ever offered on a weekly basis! Among some of the newcomers are Nosework II, Impulse Control II, and a Maintenance Reactive Dog Class that will provide more practice for graduates of our Reactive Dog Class.
The Training School will be on a 3 week winter break, starting Sunday, December 16. Classes resume again on Monday, January 7. All Levels students will receive an extension. If your membership was to expire during that time, you will receive an extension equal to those number of days, or the full 3 week extension if scheduled to expire after January 7.

Customer Spotlight: 'The Girls'
Parents: Joshua is an attorney with the Social Security Administration and Lindsey is Communications Director for a national non-profit association.
Residence: Alexandria Pet Profile: Kirsch, Mera, Korma and Krumpet, aka "the girls," are African Pygmy hedgehogs. Kirsch and Mera are three years old; Korma is two years old and Krumpet is about a year. They are all very well socialized... though are night owls and would prefer not to be bothered when it's light out - they get "huffy" when you wake them up. They also have a tendency to "hedgeball" if they aren't happy or afraid. (Korma is pictured... trying to get all four in one picture is nearly impossible!) They were adopted from Terrapin Hedgehogs in Maryland (one of the few FDA licensed breeders in the region); the three oldest since they were babies and Krumpet several months back as a "special needs" hedgehog, as she is significantly smaller and needs more attention than the other three. Korma and Krumpet LOVE people... Kirsch and Mera are very similar to cats - they could take us or leave us, as long as they have food, water and their wheels, they are happy! Hedgehogs can run up to four miles each night on their wheel - their favorite hobby. As natural insect eaters, their diet is made up of crunchy cat food and mealworms as treats. Services Used: Usually hedgehogs are pretty self-sufficient creatures, who just need fresh water and more food on a regular basis. However both Korma and Krumpet have special needs, so when we went out of town recently, we needed someone to come by and care for them. Our pet sitter, Susie was fantastic - and braved Korma's huffs and hedgeball to give her medicine once a day, orally; Korma as terminal cancer, so her medicine is for pain management. Additionally, both she and Krumpet don't drink from a traditional water bottle (like those for rabbits or hamsters), so needed their water bowls cleaned and refilled daily. Susie was great with the girls - and we were thankful that she was willing to learn how to handle and care for them; from her notes (which we loved!), she also seemed to enjoy playing with Krumpet and Korma.

Employee Spotlight: Malee

I started working at Fur-Get Me Not in 2007 as a full-time daycare employee. I left in 2008 for an internship with the Mountain Institute in Kathmandu, Nepal. When I returned in 2009, I started graduate program in Sustainability/ Environmental Management and was excited to be able to come back to Fur-Get Me Not part-time. I left again in the summer of 2011 to go to Madagascar as part of my graduate research, and then moved to Boston to finish school in the Fall of 2012. When I returned from Boston in 2012, I found myself right back at Fur-Get Me Not again part-time, and felt like I never left! Since starting at Fur-Get Me Not in 2007, I have done a bit of everything here, from daycare to walks to pet taxis, and there is never a dull moment. One of the most unique benefits for me, in addition to getting to know my wonderful co-workers, has been having an ongoing relationship with many of the dogs in the daycare, having the privilege of seeing wild puppies turn into refined adults and shy dogs come of out of their shells over the years. Fur-Get Me Not has been a wonderful place to work for me personally because I've always loved animals of any kind, wild or domesticated (and some of my foster dogs have taught me sometimes there is a very fine line between the two). I grew up in a house full of animals, including dogs, cats, fish, turtles, chameleons and an owl, and as the child of parents in the global health field grew up primarily overseas in Africa and Asia. In addition to animals my other interests include writing, travel, anything outdoors and lacrosse. I have a B.A. in English, and when not at Fur-Get Me Not spend my time doing freelance writing and editing. I also played lacrosse as an undergrad at Marymount University and have coached lacrosse at the youth and high school level. I love spending as much time outdoors as possible and graduated from the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) where I was lucky enough to spend time in the southern Alps on the south island of New Zealand (although without indoor plumbing...). One of the most wonderful things about working at Fur-Get Me Not has been being able to brings dogs to work over the years -- and how much Fur-Get Me Not has enriched their lives. After my 15 year old Golden Retriever passed away in 2009 I fostered a badly abused dog I was told was a yellow lab named Cash, who became the foster that never left. I've learned that he is in fact not a lab, and I can now say I know the many joys of owning a treeing coonhound. I feel extremely lucky that Cash was able to be socialized in the daycare at Fur-Get Me Not with such a compassionate staff...and friendly playmates. Our household added another for legged member in 2011 when my sister (also one of my roommates) adopted a black lab named Bear. I feel very fortunate to be such a long term fixture at Fur-Get Me Not and look forward to continuing to meet wonderful people and dogs! |
