PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I hope everyone had a successful summer season and that your fall is going well. Many members are reporting positive sales and optimism for the remainder of the year.

NENA is proud to be partnering with HRI to provide grants for projects that directly benefit our regional horticulture industry. Your board members met this summer to review more than 50 grant applications. We discussed the merits of each and whittled down the list to our top five recommendations that are now being reviewed by two additional panels: industry peers and scientists, respectively. We hope to be able to announce our next grant recipient at NENA's annual meeting during New England GROWS on Friday, December 4.

We're delighted that our inaugural grant recipient, Dr. Raul Cabrerra of Rutgers University, will be attending NENA's annual meeting. Dr. Cabrerra is an enthusiastic and engaged researcher. We'll all learn something from his innovative work on alternative irrigation water sources for the nursery industry.

Please don't delay in signing up for New England GROWS - it is literally right around the corner. There is a fantastic line up of speakers and special programs at GROWS (see article below) and the trade show floor will be buzzing with activity. The new, earlier dates have been well received and registration numbers are strong. Many exhibitors are offering generous show specials to help you make those big purchases before year-end.

One last reminder: NENA's annual meeting and breakfast at GROWS is a great chance to catch up with old (and new) friends. Check out the specifics below and RSVP today.

I'll see you there!

Plant Shortages
By Jake Pierson

One of NENA's founding principles is the education of its members.  As a member of the NENA board, I believe in the importance of this directive.  In regards to that mission, I wanted to share a serious issue in our industry with all of you.

Growers have been barely getting by for the past several years. They were hit hard by the recession and reduced their production quite heavily.  These reductions are industry-wide from bare root woody liners, finished woody stock, perennial liners, bedding plants, and even annuals.

The shortage of plants is real.  It WILL impact your business. The entire industry will face this for some period of time. As for us New Englanders, we may feel it more acutely than other parts of the nation. Growers are indicating a stronger demand for plant material for next spring.  That means that re-ordering from available inventories will be very difficult and as we tend to receive our material later than much of the country we could feel the pinch more acutely. Early ordering is paramount.  Please remember it is not "business as usual."

I urge you to look ahead and plan for this real problem.  Please take this seriously as I, and NENA, believe that demand for our products will increase this year and beyond.  We hope that this information can be used by all to have a profitable year.

Jake Pierson of Pierson Nurseries in Biddeford, Maine is a Director on the New England Nursery Association Board of Directors
