PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As NENA's new president, I enjoy speaking to my fellow members about the state of the industry across the region. After the long winter we all experienced, everyone reports they are busy right out of the gate and are feeling optimistic about the spring season. Here's to warm weather and eager customers. We deserve both!

From an association standpoint, NENA's annual breakfast meeting at New England Grows was a great gathering of members. At that meeting, we announced that Professor Raul Cabrera of Rutgers University is the first recipient of a grant award from the new NENA/HRI Industry Growth Initiative fund. His research project, "Use of Alternative Irrigation Water Sources for Urban Landscapes and Nursery Crops" is an important one and we look forward to our industry benefiting from his findings.

We are now in the second cycle of grant applications and encourage NENA members to spread the word about this terrific opportunity. Applications are due to HRI by May 31, 2015. Please read more below.

Best wishes for a successful spring season.

Ed Bemis, MCH

NENA President

First Recipient of NENA/HRI Grant Announced

Dr. Raul Cabrera is NENA's first Industry Growth Initiative grant recipient.

At NENA's Annual Meeting in February, it was announced that Dr. Raul Cabrera of Rutgers University is the first recipient of the new NENA Industry Growth fund with HRI. After a review of 60+ grant applications, NENA selected Dr. Cabrera's innovative research project "Use of Alternative Irrigation Water Sources for Urban Landscapes and Nursery Crops."  Water conservation is a top priority for our industry and NENA's support of Dr. Cabrera's work will help shape the way we manage this vital resource well into the future. Click here to learn more about Dr. Cabrera's project, and the grant award.

March 11-15, 2015 --Every year, NENA presents an award at the Boston Flower & Garden Show, held at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. The award is presented to the exhibit that best utilizes a range of New England native plants and their cultivars in a visually appealing and environmentally sensible setting. This year's NENA award was presented to The Massachusetts Horticultural Society for their woodland garden display. NENA is grateful to its judges (listed above) for their time and thoughtful consideration.

Ticks Appearing Early and Often

According to entomologists, the ticks are here early this year, and in greater numbers. Why? The packs of snow acted as a "blanket" for the blood-sucking insects, insulating and protecting them from the cold and wind. Ticks are also traveling - to urban areas - and they carry more than just Lyme disease. Click here to read more.
