Called to Action
Kingsburg Fire current has 3 firefighters who have been called into action to help fight the Cedar Fire. The Cedar Fire has currently burned more than 21,000 acres in the Tulare County foothills, has already caused $16 million worth of damage, and is only 5% contained. The Tulare County Administrators have requested that the Governor's Office proclaim a state of emergency for Tulare County because of this fire.
In cases of wildfires, the California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) contacts local fire agencies and asks if they have any firefighters or equipment that can be spared to help assist with containment. If the local agency has the personnel and equipment available they are sent out to action. CalOES then reimburses the local agency for any labor and equipment, as well as any costs incurred to backfill the overtime for the full-time workers who are participating on the strike team.

The Works
We are proud to welcome two new additions to our Public Works Department: Todd Walters and Richard Gordon! Walters will be joining the park maintenance team, which helps maintain parks and landscaped areas. Mr. Gordon will lend his skills to the street maintenance team, addressing road work, tree trimming and other road safety tasks.
We are also proud to recognize James Kirk, who is transitioning to the water department! James has been with the City for 12 years working on street maintenance, as well as assisting on a number of other projects. Congrats all!

Meet Nissi, Robledo-Lopez, Kingsburg's newest member of the Police force! After he was sworn in we asked Nissi a few questions just to get to know our newest team member better:
Q: What made you want to become a Police Officer?
A: "I wanted to become a Police Officer because I wanted to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. My personality is a Type A and I believe there's always a solution to a problem, no matter how big or complicated it may seem."
Q:What is your favorite part of the job?
A: "My favorite part of my career is how different every day can be."
Q:If you could say anything to your coworkers throughout the City, what would it be?
A: "It is my pleasure to be part of this organization and if I can help in any way, let me know."
Q: What do you do for fun in your spare time/what hobbies do you have?
A: "On my spare time I am usually spending time with my beautiful wife and my two beautiful daughters. If I am not with them I am usually doing homework for my Master's Degree."
Q: What are your plans for the future?
A: "My plans for the future are to learn as much as I can as a Police Officer. I hope to work in as many special assignments/collateral duties as I can to gain more valuable experience."

Don't Leave That
If you live in Kingsburg, you probably live next to a public alley. These alleys have numerous benefits, however they do have several challenges when it comes to maintaining them. This is a reminder that these public alleys are no different than any other public area, and dumping of unwanted items is prohibited.
The City of Kingsburg works closely with Mid Valley Disposal to properly tag and schedule the removal of large items. If you have large items that do not fit in your dumpster, do not dump them in the alley or the alley dumpster area, the items will NOT be collected. Residents can contact Mid Valley Disposal at (559) 237-9425 and have them pick up their items or take the items to Mid Valley Disposal yard.

Mosquito Abatement
The Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District has been serving residents since 1946. The District was formed to provide relief from mosquito bites and to protect the public from the threat of mosquito-borne diseases, such as Malaria and West-Nile Virus. There are many ways that you can help protect yourself and the area against mosquitoes and they include:
- Reporting a mosquito problem
- Reporting a green pool or other stagnant water source
- Requesting mosquito eating fish for your pond
- Reporting dead birds
To request these services or to check on what activity may be occurring in Kingsburg, go the the District's website. While the District cannot inform all residents in advance of spraying insecticides, they do notify KPD of their operations within the City.

This Week in History
On August 24, 79 A.D., Mount Vesuvius erupted in southern Italy after being dormant for centuries. The eruption completely destroyed two prominent Roman cities, Pompeii and Herculaneum. In an 18 hour long tidal wave of rock, ash, mud, and gas these two cities were buried under 14 to 17 feet of pyroclastic material. Some 2,000 people remained in the cities at the time of the eruption, and some did survive the initial blast. A cloud of poisonous gas that bellowed from the volcano is what doomed the survivors, and a second flow of rock and mud sealed their fate. These cities were utterly forgotten until their rediscovery in the 18th century. Since these cities were covered so quickly and nearly completely preserved in the ash and rock , archaeologists were able to get a never before look at the daily lives of ancient Romans.
