Congratulations to long-time Kingsburg Fire Department Volunteer John Saubert, who was honored for serving 30 years with the Department during the July 6 City Council meeting.  Joe, who recently retired, began his service when the Department was comprised of only volunteers.

John is the owner/operator of Saubert's Plumbing in Kingsburg, and while retired, continues to provide assistance to KFD when needed.  Congratulations on your retirement, and thanks for your many years of dedicated service.
Development Updates

If you've driven around town lately you may have noticed a number of both commercial and residential projects that are either underway, or are in the preparatory stages.  On July 6, the City Council heard a report on several projects and their current status, in an effort to provide updates regarding City development.  The discussion included information on projects that are open for public discussion, and to provide insight on the work occurring in the City's planning and development department.  For questions about specific projects, residents are encouraged to contact Alex Henderson

This Week in History

On July 6, 1957, Athena Gibson became the first African American woman to claim the women' singles tennis title at Wimbledon. Athena was born in Silver, South Carolina but raised in Harlem, NYC. She began playing tennis as a teenager and soon fell in love with the sport. She won the national black women's championship twice, and was one of the first African American women to play in the U.S. Open, but her career didn't fully catch fire until she was the first African American woman to win the French Open. After winning Wimbledon in 1957 she then won the U.S. Open later that same year. She was later named Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press for both 1957 and 1958. During the 1950's, her wins totaled at 56 singles and doubles titles, 11 of which where major titles.
