On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip led a small British fleet of 11 ships carrying convicts to the colony of New South Wales in Australia. This in effect founded the colony and after 30 years of great difficulty, the then colony, and later nation, celebrated this day and was then known as "Australia Day." The colony was originally intended to be a prison where the inmates were forced to do agricultural work. This is the origin of the use of the slang term "mate" since most of the original colonists were inmates.
