This Week in History
December 28, 1869, America will see the celebration of the first ever Labor Day. It was held by a labor union of tailors called "The Knights of Labor", which was originally a secret society in Philadelphia, but eventually became a national organization that played a huge roll in the labor movement in the 19th century. Though the first one was not nationally recognized it did get the ball moving. In 1884 the American Federation of Labor designated the first Monday in September to be "... set aside as a laborer's national holiday." But even with that it would take another ten years for Congress to make it an official national holiday.
