December 14, 1911, Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole. It was all part of a race between him and another explorer, named Robert Falcon Scott. The two of them traveled for more than a month in Antarctica using sleigh dogs. However Scott also used Siberian ponies and Siberian motor sledges, and this would be his down fall. The motors broke down, the ponies died, and the dogs had to be sent back. So Scott and his crew traveled on foot while Amundsen raced forward on his sleigh. Scott was found later that year, frozen solid.

There are new KPD patrol units in service! Two are already on patrol with a total of six that will eventually be utilized by the department. The new vehicles replace old units that are no longer reliable and are cost prohibitive to maintain. Ford Explorers were selected after Ford discontinued making the Crown Victoria model.
These are the first new patrol cars KPD has purchased since the early 1990's. They were purchased with the proceeds of a one-time land sale. |
City Hall will be closed on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1. Please be safe and enjoy the Holidays!
Garbage, recycling and green waste collection will only be impacted if your pickup is on Friday, December 25 and January 1. All those homes will be picked up the following day, Saturday.

Kingsburg employees Grace Reyna and Det. Rick Mejia were recently honored during City Council meetings as part of the City's employee recognition program.
Both Grace (Accounting Clerk II) and Rick (KPD Detective), were nominated and chosen by their peers for their excellent work over the past six months. Congratulations to both for their hard work and dedication to the community and organization!

Recently, we've had some questions about animal control (AC) procedures. Our AC operation is a joint effort between City Hall, Police, Public Works and most importantly, our volunteers. Some answers to FAQs include:
- KPD will pickup stray dogs that are a threat to public safety, has bitten someone, is creating a traffic hazard, or is gravely injured. A dog simply running "at large" will not be handled by KPD (this is an existing policy that has not changed recently)
- Dogs held at Kingsburg Corp. yard are vaccinated and sprayed for fleas/ticks.
- Owners must pay a fee to have their dog released from our custody. These fees offset food and shelter costs.
- For liability purposes, we're not an adoption agency. Our volunteers work diligently to get unclaimed dogs placed.
Those interested in volunteering to assist should contact volunteer Sandi Harbottle or Community Services Coordinator Ashlee Schmal. A public facebook page also helps residents share information about loose animals.

Come help us celebrate two long tenured, retiring City of Kingsburg employees!
- Sue Bauch, City Clerk
- Bob Stucky, Water Operator III
Sue and Bob have a combined 54 years of service to the City. While we're sad to see them go, we want to wish them the best of luck in their retirement!
