On November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most notable speeches given in American history, which will later be known as the Gettysburg Address. Nearly four months before the speech the most devastating battle on American soil took place at that exact spot. During this battle over 45,000 soldiers were either killed, injured, captured, or missing. Lincoln's speech, which rallied the Union to continue fighting and eventually win the war, was only 272 words long.
