In honor of Neil Armstrong's Birthday.
This Week in History

On August 5, 1861, Lincoln imposes the first federal income tax by signing the Revenue Act. Strapped for cash with which to pursue the Civil War, Lincoln and Congress agreed to impose a 3 percent tax on annual incomes over $800.  According to the U.S. Treasury Department, the comparable minimum taxable income in 2003, after adjustments for inflation, would have been approximately $16,000. Congress repealed Lincoln's tax law in 1871, but in 1909 passed the 16th Amendment, which set in place the federal income-tax system used today. Congress ratified the 16th Amendment in 1913.

After School Sign-ups
Summer is quickly winding down (yes, we're sad too).  That does mean, however, that After School Recreation will be starting up soon!

Registration begins on Monday, August 10 at City Hall.  After School Recreation will be held at Lincoln School, and runs throughout the school year.  Enjoy snacks, help with homework, and fun with friends! Hurry -  space is limited!
Family Fun
The next Movie in the Park event is set for August 8 @8pm in Memorial Park.  We'll be showing Despicable Me!

Come out to enjoy this free event.  Feel free to bring chairs or blankets, although seating is available.  Snacks will available for purchase.  See you there!
Keep It Up
Don't forget about water use maximums for each residential home!  As in June and July, residents are asked to keep water usage below 27,000 gallons for August.  This is in an effort to reduce our usage by 36% compared to 2013.

For July, residents reduced use by 38.6% - great job!  The City issued 346 residential fines for those homes who used over 27,000 gallons in June.  For those interested in finding out their July usage - contact City Hall at 897-5821.

Well Repair

Private contractors and City water department employees worked to bring Well #16 back online this week.  They installed new bowls and impellers, new stainless steel shafts, and new spider bearings. They installed a new strainer at the bottom, a new top bearing on the well head with new packing, and also had the motor inspected.

The City operates seven wells that feed all municipal connections.  While the wells don't all run at the same time, they cycle on and off as demand requires.
Thanks
Thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make National Night Out a great success!  We hope you enjoyed the great weather and entertainment options!  For a quick recap - enjoy a video of the dunk tank!
