Video Tip of the Week
This Week in History

On July 20, 1969, at 10:56 p.m. EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, 240,000 miles from Earth, speaks these words to more than a billion people listening at home: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Stepping off the lunar landing module Eagle, Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon.  There would be five more successful lunar landing missions, and one unplanned lunar swing-by, Apollo 13. The last men to walk on the moon, astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt of the Apollo 17 mission, left the lunar surface on December 14, 1972.

Safety Sweep
Recently, 70 law enforcement officers, local, State and Federal did a sweep of the eastside cities of Clovis, Fowler, Sanger, Orange Cove, Parlier, Reedley, Selma, Kingsburg, and unincorporated communities such as Del Rey. Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium (MAGEC) made 14 Felony arrests and 15 misdemeanor arrests.  All arrestees went to jail. During the sweep, 35 officers (including our own Kingsburg PD officer) came into Kingsburg.  MAGEC was in town about 20-30 minutes, but no arrests were made in Kingsburg.

This type of proactive police work keeps Kingsburg on the forefront of fighting gang crime before it develops and spreads.
Truck Route Change
Motorists will notice that 18th Avenue has been designated a No Truck Route.  City Council discussed the issue informally during the April 15 regular Council meeting, and then during a public hearing on June 3.  Ultimately, Council decided to remove 18th as a truck route for several reasons:
  • Maintenance costs to 18th Ave from truck traffic (one semi trip = 3,000 car trips)
  • Traffic congestion and conflict with pedestrian and bike traffic
  • Turn radius issues at the 18th/Sierra St. intersection
  • Pedestrian interaction at both Lincoln School and Kingsburg High School crosswalks
  • Maintenance and safety issues related to road cleanup from citrus and grape season harvest runoff

The notification signs will remain for 30 days, and will be followed by an additional 30 days of warnings issued by KPD.  After that time, citations may be written for using 18th as a truck route.

Safe Return

Noticed loose dogs in your neighborhood?  The City of Kingsburg can help, but residents should be aware of the following process:
  • KPD will pickup stray dogs, but their first priority is public safety, so please understand if they cannot respond immediately
  • Stray animals are held at the Kingsburg Public Works yard for a minimum four (4) day hold
  • We have great volunteers that help to get animals placed
  • KPD cannot take surrendered animals.  SPCA may be able to assist if you can no longer care for your pet.
  • There are fees associated with releasing a dog from the City yard.  These fees help offset the costs for food and shelter.

Make sure your dog is licensed with the City - it's free for dogs that have been altered.

Vote
Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 8th @8pm in Memorial Park!  We'll have another free movie to view - but it's up to you to pick which one!  Voting will run until Wednesday, July 29. The top vote getter will be shown under the stars!  The movies are free to attend with snacks available for purchase.
