Quote of the Week
"Always borrow money from a pessimist. He won't expect it back."
This Week in History

On June 18, 1885, the dismantled State of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrives in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue, which was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, became known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.

Cannonball
Want your child to be safe in the water?  The Crandell Swim Complex offers swim lessons and activities throughout the summer.  With a number of different offerings - we can accommodate all ages and skill levels:
  • Parent and Tot - connect with your child under the age of 4 to help them get comfortable in the water
  • Tot - great for ages 3-5 in helping to learn basic water skills
  • Levels 1-3 - provides different techniques and proper skills for each level
  • Swimmers - develop your stroke and treading techniques.

There are three sessions remaining this summer, with all holding lessons in the morning.  Session four also offers evening times.  The cost is $40 per child.  For more info, contact Ashlee Schmal.

Del Monte Site
During the June 17 City Council meeting, Grace Church of the Valley presented a proposed project to be completed at the former Del Monte Plant  located along 18th Ave.

The plans were first heard and approved by the City's Planning Commission during their June 11 meeting.  The applicant has been working with City staff since 2013 to provide information, conduct a traffic study and address mitigation requirements. Last night, the Council fielded questions from the public, asked for clarification from the applicants, and ultimately voted to approve the project 4-0.
Single Family Homes
Lennar Homes presented a proposal to build 34 single family homes on a vacant piece of land located south of Kamm Ave. and in between 14th and 18th Avenue.

The project was originally approved by the City Planning Commission on May 21.  The project was unanimously approved by Council last night, and will now initiate an annexation process through Fresno LAFCo

Discussion last evening also included questions related to water use.  City Engineer Dave Peters indicated that the City has adequate water to supply the new development, and that the State mandated restrictions don't impact new development.  In essence, whether a current or new resident, conservation is key.

Welcome

There is a new restaurant option in town!  Malan's Restaurant has opened on Draper Street, locating in the old Jonathan's building.
