Quote of the Week
This Week in History

On May 5, 1961 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, Navy Commander Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. is launched into space aboard the Freedom 7 space capsule, becoming the first American astronaut to travel into space. The suborbital flight, which lasted 15 minutes and reached a height of 116 miles into the atmosphere, was a major triumph for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  NASA was established in 1958 to keep U.S. space efforts abreast of recent Soviet achievements, such as the launching of the world's first artificial satellite-Sputnik 1-in 1957.

Safety Repairs

If you are downtown early next week, you'll notice a lot of work taking place in preparation for Swedish Festival.  Businesses and residents will also see Precision Concrete Cutting working on 76 locations on Draper Street.  The company will be performing precise cuts to the concrete to repair sidewalk trip and fall hazards.  The company will complete the work in two days early next week!

We're Here to Help

Have you ever wondered why certain businesses open in Kingsburg, but not others?  There are a number of complex reasons, including:
  • Market driven service needs
  • Available land
  • Interested parties
  • Zoning and permitted uses

A common misconception is that City controls what does and does not locate in a particular town.  Businesses, especially national retailers, have teams of individuals that complete studies, examine trends and demographics, and make decisions on where to locate their next store.   The City has no more control over their individual decision than it does on a homeowner looking to move into a new home.  When you buy a home, you look at a number of things (schools, amenities, safety) - business owners are no different.

Cities have control over zoning (commercial, light industrial, residential) - but within those zones are permitted uses - meaning certain types of uses are allowed, and others are not.  Where the City can assist is by offering incentives to locate, improving the permitting process, and providing business friendly policies.  Leaders also are in place to help educate potential businesses on all the reasons they should locate (incentives, safety, business friendly).

While Cities have the ability to promote their town as the place to be for any number of reasons, the ultimate decision to locate is made by the business owner/corporation.

Great Timing

A reminder that beginning May 15, the City will begin imposing fines for those properties not following the new water conservation guidelines.

Residents received an informational insert in their May utility bill detailing the specifics of these water restrictions. Additionally, landscape businesses that hold a current business license with the City were mailed a letter explaining the additional water restrictions.

New Council Incentive:

  • City will provide timers for those properties not equipped with automatic sprinklers
  • City will purchase timers locally and provide one (1) to each property that request a timer
  • Funds are limited to $10,000 - paid through water penalty and fine revenues.  Supplies are limited and are first come first serve.

The timers, being purchased from Kingsburg Ace Hardware, will be available at City Hall beginning Monday (5/11) afternoon.  For more information on the new incentive program, please contact Alex Henderson.
