Quote of the Week
This Week in History

On April 29, 2004, the National World War II Memorial opens in Washington, D.C., to thousands of visitors, providing overdue recognition for the 16 million U.S. men and women who served in the war. The memorial is located on 7.4 acres on the former site of the Rainbow Pool at the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The Capitol dome is seen to the east, and Arlington Cemetery is just across the Potomac River to the west.  Though the federal government donated $16 million to the memorial fund, it took more than $164 million in private donations to get it built. Former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole, who was severely wounded in the war, and actor Tom Hanks were among its most vocal supporters. Only a fraction of the 16 million Americans who served in the war would ever see it. Four million World War II veterans were living at the time, with more than 1,100 dying every day, according to government records.

Lift Off

The second Kingsburg Launching Pad competition is well underway.  Several applicants submitted their entrepreneurial ideas early in 2015.  The field has been narrowed and two contestants remain in the race to receive up to $25,000 to get their business kick-started.

The contestants will be pitching their ideas during the 2015 Swedish Festival, but they need your input first!  Each company has a quick, free survey that will help provide vital information for their business model.

Complete both surveys for your chance to win a $50 gift card.

Moving Right Along

Have you been to the Downtown Park lately?  The elevated area continues its transformation after the old Arbor structure was removed for safety purposes.  Much of the retaining wall has been installed.  Soon the new stone caps, iron rod fencing and lighting will be added to the area.  In conjunction with the City of Kingsburg, we would like to thank the following sponsors, who donated at least $5,000 to the renovation:

If you'd like to contribute to the new park - please contact Alex Henderson.

Reduce the Use

The City of Kingsburg is one of the largest consumers of water per capita in the entire State. Outdoor irrigation is the main reason for our extremely high use.

To help meet the required conservation levels, the City Council has instituted the following water restrictions:

  • Outdoor watering reduced from three (3) days a week to two (2).
    • EVEN numbered address irrigation days: Wednesday and Sunday only
    • ODD numbered address irrigation days: Tuesday and Saturday only.
    • No watering on Monday, Thursday or Friday.
  • New outdoor irrigation hours
    • NO watering between 6:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M. on any day.
    • Drip irrigation is not restricted to specific days.

Water restrictions already in place include:

  • Do not allow water to flow beyond your property line.
  • Automatic shutoff nozzle required for washing vehicles.
  • Washing down of driveways or sidewalks is prohibited.

Beginning May 15, those violating any water guidelines will be cited on their first violation.

Residents will be receiving an informational insert in their next utility bill detailing the specifics of these water restrictions. Additionally, landscape businesses that hold a current business license with the City were mailed a letter explaining the additional water restrictions.

Top 3 ways to conserve:

  • Make sure sprinkler timers are set to the correct time, and duration (3-5 minutes per station)
  • Do not over water plants-install a drip system for best results and water conservation
  • Check for leaking toilets that run continuously

For more information on what you can do to conserve water, contact Alex Henderson.

Staying Put

Heard our Coffee Pot tower is moving?  Don't fret, it's staying right where it is.  The miscommunication started with a Fresno Bee article that referenced another similar tower moving.
