Quote of the Week
This Week in History

On April 25,1983, the Soviet Union released a letter that Russian leader Yuri Andropov wrote to Samantha Smith, an American fifth-grader from Manchester, Maine, inviting her to visit his country. Andropov's letter came in response to a note Smith had sent him in December 1982, asking if the Soviets were planning to start a nuclear war. At the time, the United States and Soviet Union were Cold War enemies.

Smith accepted Andropov's invitation and flew to the Soviet Union with her parents for a visit. Afterward, she became an international celebrity and peace ambassador, making speeches, writing a book and even landing a role on an American television series. In February 1984, Yuri Andropov died from kidney failure. The following year, in August 1985, Samantha Smith died tragically in a plane crash at age 13.

The Fowler Kingsburg Selma Relay for Life is this Saturday, April 25th! This annual event raises awareness and save lives from cancer, it is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Highlights of the event include:

  • Teams of people camp out around a track
  • Members of each team take turns walking around the track
  • Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie

#Conserve

The City of Kingsburg is one of the largest consumers of water per capita in the entire State. Outdoor irrigation is the main reason for our extremely high use.  To help meet the required conservation levels, the City Council approved the following water restrictions at the April 15th meeting:

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATLY

  • Outdoor watering reduced from three (3) days a week to two (2).
    • EVEN numbered address irrigation days: Wednesday and Sunday only
    • ODD numbered address irrigation days: Tuesday and Saturday only.
    • No watering on Monday, Thursday or Friday.
  • New outdoor irrigation hours
    • NO watering between 6:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M. on any day.
    • Drip irrigation is not restricted to specific days.

Water restrictions already in place include:

  • Do not allow water to flow beyond your property line.
  • Automatic shutoff nozzle required for washing vehicles.
  • Washing down of driveways or sidewalks is prohibited.

City crews will be performing sweeps and handing out warning violations for the next month. Beginning May 15, those violating any water guidelines will be cited on their first violation.

Residents will be receiving an informational insert in their next utility bill detailing the specifics of these water restrictions. Additionally, landscape businesses that hold a current business license with the City were mailed a letter explaining the additional water restrictions.

Top 3 ways to conserve:

  • Make sure sprinkler timers are set to the correct time, and duration
  • Do not over water plants-install a drip system for best results and water conservation
  • Check for leaking toilets that run continuously

Marion Villas Update

Construction on the Marion Villas Senior Living apartments is still underway.

Currently, workers are focusing on the interior framework, and progress continues to be made on the drywall, electrical and plumbing. The expected date of completion is late-Summer 2015.  Those interested in more info about locating at the Villas should contact Fresno Housing Authority at 559-309-7170.

Train Depot Update

Restoration of the old Train Depot is slowly progressing. Due to the age of the building and necessary infrastructural improvements, restoration is taking significant time. The exterior has been painted, with brick detail added. Focus is being placed on work on the interior- drywall needs to be put up, along with updates to electrical and plumbing throughout the building. The end result will be a beautiful historical landmark that will be open to the public for tours, along with an educational center on Kingsburg's history.

City Partnership

The City of Kingsburg is continuing their efforts to improve the Downtown through the Façade/Alley Partnership Program. The facade and alley improvement program partners the City with existing business owners to invest in their buildings or alleyways in the central commercial corridor. Façade/Alley improvement applications are available at City Hall. For additional information, please contact Alex Henderson.
