Quote of the Week
This Week in History

At 5:13 a.m., an earthquake estimated at close to 8.0 on the Richter scale strikes San Francisco, California, killing hundreds of people and collapsing numerous buildings. The April 18, 1906 quake was caused by a slip of a 275 mile long segment in the San Andreas Fault. Fires immediately broke out and-because broken water mains prevented firefighters from stopping them-firestorms soon developed citywide.  By April 23, most fires were extinguished, and authorities commenced the task of rebuilding the devastated metropolis. It was estimated that some 3,000 people died as a result of the Great San Francisco Earthquake and the devastating fires it inflicted upon the city. Almost 30,000 buildings were destroyed, including most of the city's homes and nearly all the central business district.

H2O Changes

At the April 15th City Council meeting, the Council discussed additional water conservation measures for Kingsburg residents. The Council held public comment and conversation for several hours, and made the following changes:

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
  • Outdoor watering is reduced from three (3) days to two (2).
    • ODD numbered addresses can water on Tuesday and Saturday only
    • EVEN numbered addresses an water on Wednesday and Sunday only
    • No watering on Monday, Thursday and Friday
  • New outdoor irrigation hours.  No watering between 6am-8pm on any day.

Also, beginning May 15, those violating any water guidelines will be cited on their first violation.  Crews will be performing sweeps and handing out warning violations for the next month.  All residents will be receiving an informational insert in their next utility bill.

Outside of the above changes, the Council also considered several other reduction measures that will be discussed at future meetings:

  • tiered-conservation pricing penalizing gross water users
  • partnership incentive programs for turf replacement
  • limit on pool refills
  • restriction on planting of rye grass during winter months

The City of Kingsburg is one of the largest consumers of water per capita in the entire State. Outdoor irrigation is main reason for our extremely high use. Find out what you can do to conserve water. For more information, contact Alex Henderson

Public Awareness

The Kingsburg Police Department would like to remind everyone April is National Distracted Driver Awareness Month. Distracted driving takes many forms,  including reading, eating, watching videos and grooming; but cell phones are at the top of the list. Distracted driving can lead to serious injury or death. According to the California Highway Patrol drivers are 23 times more likely to be involved in a collision when texting and talking on a cell phone increases your chances of being involved in a collision 400%.

Drivers should resist behaviors that take their eyes and attention off the road and practice defensive driving. The U.S. Government website for Distracted Driving has additional information and resources.

Bond Refinancing

The City Council further discussed the refinancing of three outstanding bond obligations at the April 15th City Council meeting. The 1991 and 1992 Local Agency Revenue Bonds were combined into one bond and renamed as the 2015 Local Agency Revenue Bond. The 2004 Lease Bond for the Fire Station on Sierra Street and Bethel Avenue was approved by the Council to be refinanced as well.

The refinancing that was approved at the recent Council meeting will not add any years to the current repayment schedule and stands to save an estimated $789,000 over the life of the loans. For additional information, contact Alex Henderson.
