Quote of the Week
as it does to plan."

This Week in History

29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for his revolutionary new invention--the telephone on March 7, 1876. With the help of Thomas A. Watson, Bell developed a prototype. Three days after filing the patent, the telephone carried its first intelligible message--the famous "Mr. Watson, come here, I need you"--from Bell to his assistant. At the same time, Western Union Telegraph Company employed Gray and fellow inventor Thomas A. Edison to develop their own telephone technology. Bell sued, and the case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which upheld Bell's patent rights. In the years to come, the Bell Company withstood repeated legal challenges to emerge as the massive American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T).

Dog Park Work

The City Council accepted the recommendation  from the Community Services Commission to locate an off leash dog park at the ponding basin located at Golden State and Laurel Street.

The first step towards opening the new dog park is adding an amendment to the municipal code  allowing off leash dogs at this location.

Concurrently, the phased plan for creating an animal-friendly location is also underway. Some of the necessary steps include discing the lot, cleaning up the location and repairing and adding fencing. The goal for the opening of Kingsburg's first official off-leash dog park is mid-2015. The Community Services Commission will be working to secure private funding to help bolster additional amenities.  If you would like more information or are interested in helping to raise funds, contact Community Service Coordinator Ashlee Winslow Schmal.

Bond Refinancing

The City of Kingsburg is in the process of refinancing three outstanding bond obligations. The 1991 and 1992 Local Agency Revenue Bonds will be combined into one bond and renamed as the 2015 Local Agency Revenue Bond. The 2004 Lease Bond for the Fire Station on Sierra Street and Bethel Avenue will be refinanced as well.

The debt restructuring does not add any years to the current repayment schedule and stands to save an estimated $789,000 over the life of the loans. For additional information, contact Alex Henderson.

Water Meter Bills

On February 26th, letters were sent to affected property owners regarding the recent water meter installation.  Each letter stated the cost of the meter, installation and labor.  The city has created a dedicated page to help answer questions about the project, including a FAQ.
Residents can also contact city hall at (559) 897-5821.

The project itself came in nearly $500,000 under budget.  This occurred because of a public bidding process, City oversight of the contractor, and perhaps most importantly; the negotiated and bulk purchasing discount of the equipment needed to complete the work.

KHS Fundraiser

Salazar's Bar and Grill is providing a fundraiser for the Kingsburg High School Music Department. This spicy Mexican brunch will feature chefs Stan and Lise Ruiz! Be sure to purchase tickets for the Saturday, March 14th event and show your support for the Music department at Kingsburg High School!

Lions Club Project

The Kingsburg Lions Club is working on improving the Downtown (Coffee Pot) Park. Because of safety concerns, the Lions Club is removing the deteriorated Arbor around the picnic area.  Once removed, they will begin work on the beautification phase of the project.  The project will maintain safe access and electrical use so that regular use can continue.

Thank you to the Lions Club for their generosity and hard work to help keep our park looking great!
