Quote of the Week
"Nobody cares
how much you know, until they know
how much you care."

--Theodore Roosevelt
This Week in History

In the summer of 1846, the Donner Party, a group of California-bound emigrants set out in a wagon train from Springfield, Illinois. The emigrants decided to avoid the usual route and try a new trail across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The group split into two parties but an overnight storm on October 28 blocked the trail and trapped the Donner Party in the Sierras. The first
first party of travelers found safety at a Native American Village in early January; upon learning of the stranded Donner Party four rescue groups were sent out. On February 19, 1847 the Donner Party reached safety; the voyage concluded in April 1847 when the remaining travelers were brought to Sutter's Fort. Of the 89 original members of the Donner Party, only 45 reached California.
