Quote of the Week
"Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and the shadows will fall behind you."

-- Walt Whitman
This Week in History

On February 4,1974 19 year-old Patty Hearst was kidnapped from her Berkley, CA apartment. The
Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), a small U.S. leftist group, announced that Hearst was being held as a "prisoner of war". Months later, Hearst participated in an armed robbery of a San Francisco bank and later, a robbery of a Los Angeles store; Hearst also declared that she had joined the SLA of her own free will. On September 18, 1975 after criss-crossing the country with her captors (or conspirators) Hearst was arrested for armed robbery. Despite the claim that she had been brainwashed by the SLA, in March 1976 Hearst was sentenced to 7 years in prison. After serving 21 months, President Carter communicated her  and in 2001 was pardoned by President Clinton.

Highway 99 Update

Construction on State Route 99 from Kingsburg to Goshen to create a 6-lane freeway is still underway. The fog and cold weather have slowed the construction process.

Construction of the first lane and the shoulder will be done in the next few weeks, with the lanes set to be striped sometime this month. The last 15,000 tons of pavement is set to be placed in late May or June. The expected date of completion for the entire stretch is July, 2015.

If you have additional questions, please contact CalTrans Central Region Construction Office Chief Elias Mahfoud (897-2253).

Water Usage
With California facing one of it's most severe droughts on record, Kingsburg's citizens are doing all they can to save water. Looking at the city's water consumption totals it is apparent just how committed the citizens are about putting in a conscious effort to minimize their water use.

January's water usage is down 27% from 2014! Let's keep up this positive development on decreasing the city's water use!
2015-2016 Budget Schedule
The City of Kingsburg's 2015-2016 budget schedule has been adopted and was approved by the City Council on February 4th. There is an upcoming mid-year budget review in late February.  The finance committee will meet in February, March and April; on the agenda is the review the current progress of each department through their Capital Improvement Plans. Requests for the 2015-2016 budget are due in April for each department. In May there will be a final review of the 2014-2015 revenue and expenditure.

The City Council will approve the budget guidelines and parameters this month, and an initial budget will be presented in May. There will be a public hearing in June where the final consideration and approval of the 2015-2016 budget will take place.

If you have additional questions please contact Alex Henderson.
