Quote of the Week
"We relish news
of our heroes, forgetting that we are extraordinary to someone too."

-- Helen Hayes
This Week in History

At 11:38 a.m. on January 28, 1986, America watched as the space shuttle Challenger lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Among the seven member crew was

Christa McAuliffe, a high school teacher and the first ordinary U.S. civilian to travel into space. Seventy-three seconds after lifting off, the shuttle exploded in a plume of smoke and fire leaving no survivors.

President Ronald Reagan appointed a special commission to look into what went wrong; the

investigation determined that the explosion was caused by the failure of an "O-ring" seal in one of the two solid-fuel rockets. The Challenger disaster was the first major space shuttle accident; it was not until September 1988 that space shuttle flights resumed.

6th Ave. Construction
Construction on 6th Avenue began this month and will continue over the next few weeks. The current work includes sanitary sewer main repairs, being performed by Selma Kingsburg Fowler County Sanitation District (SKF).

Once the sewer work is complete, construction will begin on a reconstruction of 6th Avenue from Sierra Street to Kern Street. There may be additional road blocking or road closures. For more information or inquiries, contact Alex Henderson.
Water Meter Update
In 2014, water meters were installed at 1,800 of the residences in the City. Over the course of the last few months, city staff has been diligently working to update the software with meter numbers and supplemental information.

The final phase of data entry is almost complete; the next step is sending out letters to each home-owner regarding their meters. Letters will be mailed in February and will contain information related to the project, the meter bill, and options for payment.  This letter will be sent separately from your regular utility bill - so be on the look out!

If you have additional questions please contact Alex Henderson.
