Quote of the Week
This Week in History
At the first light of dawn, December 25, 2014, many of the German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines across no-man's-land, calling out "Merry Christmas" in their enemies' native tongues. At first, the Allied soldiers feared it was a trick, but seeing the Germans unarmed they climbed out of their trenches and shook hands with the enemy soldiers. The men exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings and sang carols and songs. The so-called Christmas Truce of 1914 came only five months after the outbreak of war in Europe and was one of the last examples of the outdated notion of chivalry between enemies in warfare.
Lighting Spectacular
The winners have been selected!  The first annual Deck the House competition was judged on Friday evening.  Nearly twenty entries were reviewed, with the top three awarded gift certificates to Berman's Flowers.  The event was sponsored by RPS Real Estate and Berman's Flowers.

The winning homes are located on Erling Way as well as Hemma Drive, but many homes can be seen by driving throughout Kingsburg.
Tree Disposal
Mid Valley Disposal will be collecting holiday trees/wreaths during the first two weeks of January.  If you wish to dispose of the tree in your green waste bin (free of charge), simply cut the tree into no longer than three (3) foot sections.

Fake/Flocked trees can be placed directly in the trash bin.  If you wish to have the trees picked up, you may do so for a minimal fee:
  • trees up to 6 feet - $5.00
  • trees over 6 feet -   $10.00

To have your tree picked up, simply contact City Hall at 897-5821.  The cost of the pickup will be placed on your regular utility bill.  All trees must have tinsel, ornaments and other objects removed prior to pickup or disposal.

Foggy Vision
Did you know Highway 99 is considered one of the most dangerous highways in the US?  This is due to the high volume of traffic and seasonal fog that hampers vision.  Tule fog season has arrived, take caution:
  • Increase your minimum safety distance
  • Slow down
  • Turn on your fog lights, and use low beams
  • Use the right edge of the road or painted road markings as a guide
  • Don't use cruise control and drive defensively

Make sure you always check road conditions before heading out.  Buckle your seat belt and stay safe.

Christmas Tree Damage
The City's Christmas tree suffered several thousand dollars worth of damage over this past weekend when a car hit the tree base and fled.  The majority of damage occurred to the tree's base and the fencing that surrounded the base.

The Kingsburg Police Department is asking that anyone with information related to the incident please contact them at 897-5821.
Office Hours/Collections
City offices will be closed on the following days in observance of the holidays:
  • December 25 & 31
  • January 1

In addition, regular garbage, recycling and green waste collection will be delayed one full day each week on December 25 and January 1.  So, if your regular collection is on Thursday, it will be delayed until Friday of the same week.
