At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ends. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France, and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure. Unfortunately, the peace treaty that officially ended the conflict-the Treaty of Versailles of 1919-forced punitive terms on Germany that destabilized Europe and laid the groundwork for World War II.

The City's Planning Commission met on Thursday evening to discuss a proposal presented by Crestwood Mental Health to occupy the former Kingsburg Hospital location.
The meeting was held at Rafer Johnson Junior High to accommodate an expected large turnout. The City's Planning Commission heard presentation from the City's planning dept., the applicant, and comments from several members of the public.
After nearly four hours of discussion, the planning commission decided the continue the public hearing to Thursday, November 20 at 6:00pm (held at Council Chambers). The Commission asked for additional clarification regarding the conditions for approval, the variance proposed, and potential additional safety measures that could be put in place to make sure the neighborhood is well protected. The City completed Police Chief finalist interviews this past week, with both a five member community panel and a five member professional panel participating to help interview and vet the candidates, and provide insight on the type of candidate the City desires.
The Police Chief position is currently occupied by Interim Chief Drew Bessinger, who was appointed after Jeff Dunn retired in May, 2014.
The City conducted a national search and narrowed the field to five finalists based upon their experience, qualifications and supplemental information provided. Further information and timeline regarding hiring will be provided as the process continues.

The weekend has arrived! The City's annual Fall Clean Up is this Saturday, November 15. This year's event will be held at:
- Mid Valley Yard; 1535 Ave. 392
- 7:00am - 2:30pm
Residents are required to show proof of residency in order to participate free of charge. Household hazardous waste will NOT be accepted as part of this event. |
The City continues to work with the developer of the new subdivision on the corner of Academy/Kamm Ave to expedite the opening of the intersection.
The intersection closure has been delayed due the following:
- Location and extension of existing utilities (gas, AT&T, electric);
- Necessary water mainline extension;
- Scheduling of asphalt pavement work to complete the work.
Some of the required work was unknown until the utilities were exposed underground. We apologize for the inconvenience and are confident the intersection will be reopened by November 18. Thank you again for your patience. |
