Quote of the Week
This Week in History
Beginning early on the morning of this day in 1862, Confederate and Union troops in the Civil War clash near Maryland's Antietam Creek in the bloodiest one-day battle in American history.  By the time the sun went down, both armies still held their ground, despite staggering combined casualties--nearly 23,000 of the 100,000 soldiers engaged, including almost 4,000 dead.  On the morning of September 18, both sides gathered their wounded and buried their dead. That night, Lee turned his forces back to Virginia. His retreat gave President Lincoln the moment he had been waiting for to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, a historic document that turned the Union effort in the Civil War into a fight for the abolition of slavery.
Water Update
As many may already be aware, the City was required to begin temporarily chlorinating our water source last Friday afternoon.  Several steps have been taken since the discovery last week.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we work to make sure we continue to provide safe, reliable water source.  We apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.  Those with additional questions are encouraged to contact Alex Henderson or contact City Hall.
Farewell 'Bergie'
The City Council and staff wish to pass their condolences to the family of Leland Bergstrom.  Leland, or 'Bergie', was involved in a number of public service roles, and served the City of Kinsburg in a number of ways; including volunteer firefighter, Planning Commissioner, City Council member, and Mayor for two terms.

Services will be held this Friday, September 19th. A graveside service will be held at the Kingsburg Cemetery at 10 AM. This will be followed by an 11 AM memorial service at the Kingsburg Community Church with a luncheon following.
We'll Take That
Residents now have new options related to the safe disposal of medical sharps.  The City has reached an agreement with the Kmart Pharmacy located on Sierra St. to provide a secured sharps kiosk.

Citizens may also bring unused or expired Rx drugs to the Kingsburg Police Department for drop off. Each of the services are provided free of charge, and are in place to help protect our waterways and avoid potential injury from illegal disposal.
Economic Updates
During their regular meeting on September 17, the City Council heard a presentation from Economic Development Coordinator Jolene Polyack.  The annual review of economic development in the City centered around recent development, future growth, and the over 500 new jobs brought to Kingsburg alone in the past year.

In addition, the Economic Development Committee recently conducted three surveys to help guide future discussions:
  1. Downtown Business Survey
  2. Lease Survey
  3. Consumer Interest Survey

Each of these surveys were conducted through a grant received by the Fresno Housing Authority.  The surveys will be used when attracting new businesses, as well as providing a guideline for our Downtown development.

Busy City
There are a number of projects currently underway throughout Kingsburg.  Some updates include:
  • Riverside, Plumas & Lindquist Reconstruction.  The sewer line replacement on Plumas is now complete, with concrete work expected to be complete by the end of the week.
  • Train Depot Rehab:  Crews have worked on concrete removal, rough plumbing and bathroom framing.   Paint removal and new framing inside the Depot are the next steps.
  • Marion Villas:  Framing continues throughout the project.  Concrete bulb outs and landscape plans have been approved for each of the four corners.
  • Tract 5609 (subdivision on Academy/Kamm):  Sewer lines installed with water line installation now underway.  Footings for the retaining and block walls on the south and east side of the project continues.

Questions regarding these projects can be directed to the City's engineer, Dave Peters.
