Quote of the Week
"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."

--
John A. Shedd

This Week in History
On this day in 1886, Apache chief Geronimo surrenders to U.S. government troops. For 30 years, the mighty Native American warrior had battled to protect his tribe's homeland; however, by 1886 the Apaches were exhausted and hopelessly outnumbered. General Nelson Miles accepted Geronimo's surrender, making him the last Indian warrior to formally give in to U.S. forces and signaling the end of the Indian Wars in the Southwest.
Job Well Done
During the September 3 City Council meeting, several employees of the Kingsburg Fire Department were recognized for their outstanding service to the community.

PCF Curtis Rusko and FF Mike Sybesma were
recognized by City Council and citizen Karlene Kjar-Graham.  Ms. Kjar-Graham experienced a medical episode earlier this summer and may have died without the assistance of KFD.  She expressed her gratitude during the meeting.

In addition, Cptn. Wayne Osborne, FF Kevin Cook and FF Chris Bailey were all recognized for their service during the "Beaver Fire" wildfire in Klamath, California.  The crew spent two weeks fighting the fire, and were sent home with the fire almost entirely contained.
Chief Recruitment
The City of Kingsburg is now officially advertising for the position of full time Police Chief.  City Council approved an updated job description during their September 3 regular meeting.

The position is open until filled, and first review of resumes will begin on October 3, 2014.  Those interested can find more by visiting the City's website, and viewing a full brochure regarding the position and the community.
Fall Into Fun
Make sure you mark your calendars for this year's Harvest Moon Festival!  Held on Saturday, September 27 in downtown Kingsburg, the festival helps to honor all local agriculture.

The event begins at 5pm, and includes:
  • Live Jazz Bands
  • Crayfish Chowder
  • Farmers Market
  • Baking Contest
  • Food Vendors

The event is highlighted when the Great Pumpkin Arrives on site.

Residents have likely already noticed banners on the Draper Street corners honoring farming in the Kingsburg area.

Dog Park Update
During the August 6 City Council meeting, several residents voiced their displeasure with the use of Erling Park as an "off leash" dog park. With all information received, Council made the determination to phase out Erling Park for off leash use, but directed staff to explore new potential locations.

During their September 3 meeting, City Council continued the discussion of the potential for a relocation of an off leash dog park.  Staff was directed to continue the exploration of a new site, with the Community Services Commission overseeing the coordination.
