Quote of the Week
"You're only given one little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it."

This Week in History
On August 11, 1934 A group of federal prisoners classified as "most dangerous" arrives at Alcatraz Island, a 22-acre rocky outcrop situated 1.5 miles offshore in San Francisco Bay. The convicts--the first civilian prisoners to be housed in the new high-security penitentiary--joined a few dozen military prisoners left over from the island's days as a U.S. military prison.  In 1972, Alcatraz was opened to the public as part of the newly created Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is maintained by the National Park Service. More than one million tourists visit Alcatraz Island and the former prison annually.
New Subdivision
After approval by City Council at the August 6 meeting, developers have started work on a residential subdivision located on the southwest corner of Kamm Ave and Academy.

The development includes 46 single family homes ranging in size from approximately 1,700 - 2,400 square feet.  As part of the project, the developer will also complete infrastructure improvements to both Kamm and Academy, as well as under-grounding the overhead utilities in the area.
Safety First
Summer is winding down, and school returns next week!  Kingsburg High School begins on Monday, August 18, and the remaining schools begin full time on Wednesday, August 20th.  School time, especially the beginning of the year, means more pedestrians around the school buildings.  A few tips to be safe:
  • Never pass a school bus with lights flashing - traffic in both directions must stop
  • Do not block crosswalks
  • Be alert - children can be unpredictable when crossing the street
  • Be on the lookout for those biking to school.  Share the road and pass with caution.

Good luck to all the students on their new year!

Construction Progress

Work continues on the Marion Villas Senior Living complex.  Located on the corner of Marion and Ellis, the framing work has begun, with utility and infrastructure work continuing around the building.

Residents may notice cutouts at the intersection of Marion and Ellis.  These areas will eventually house "bump outs" similar to those on Draper Street.

The Villas will hold 46 senior living units, a community room, and nearly 3,200 square feet of retail space.  Those interested in potentially locating should contact the Fresno Housing Authority at 877-386-1777.

Home Maintenance
Throughout the year, the City addresses concerns related to overall property maintenance.  Some of the most typical issues include:
  • Abandoned vehicles
  • Weed/lawn issues
  • Storage of household items outdoors
  • Fence repair

Initial notifications include a timeline for correction and steps for rectifying the issue.  If you notice an issue in your neighborhood, let us know.  In the meantime, residents can always contact Mid Valley Disposal to assist with cleanup efforts.   The City will also be holding a fall cleanup day later this year - with exact date to be announced.

After School Fun
With school just around the corner, now is the time to sign your child(ren) up for the City's After School Recreation program.  The program begins the first day of school - Wednesday, August 20 and runs from 1:00pm-5:00pm.

Open to K-8th grade and held at Roosevelt Elementary School, activities include homework help, arts and crafts and other activities.  Sign up today, as space is limited.
