This Week in Kingsburg History
"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence."

-- Vince Lombardi
This Week in History
On June 17, 1885, the dismantled State of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrives in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue, which was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, became known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.
Historic Ground Breaking
The day is finally approaching!  While preliminary work has already begun on the Historic Train Depot, the City will be holding an official Ground Breaking (golden spike) ceremony on Friday, June 27 @9am.

All are welcome to come help celebrate several years of hard work to ensure the historic building is restored.

Kingsburg resident and contractor CJ Brock will be completing the repairs, which are being funded through a federal highway transportation grant, as well as with private donations.
Happening Next Week
Your new containers will be on the way next week!  The containers will also have an informational packet to help answer additional questions you may have.

Beginning next week, all old containers will be removed from your residence, and the new containers will be delivered the same day.  For purposes of making sure every home gets their new containers, they will be delivered to the curb.  If your containers are currently collected in the alley, residents will be asked to take their new containers to that location for proper pickup.

Mid Valley will be starting their pickups on Monday, June 30.  If you have any questions before or after the pickup, please contact City Hall at 897-5821.
Budget Approval
During their regular Council meeting on June 18, the City Council voted 5-0 to approve the 2014-2015 annual budget.  The budget transmittal gives a full overview, with a few items of note:
  • No cuts in service or personnel - no fee increases for residents
  • Funding for two (2) vacant police officer positions
  • 14 capital improvement projects (road repair, bike lanes, train depot) - largely funded by federal grants
  • Emphasis on economic development
  • Budget based upon strategic planning process
  • Adoption of annual goals for each City department

Residents can view the recently approved budget on the City's website.

A Summer Affair
The City's summer band concert series opener starts tonight! Held on Thursday nights, visitors can enjoy music, food and fun with neighbors.  2014 dates include:
  • June 19 & 26
  • July 10,17, 24 & 31

Note there will be no concert on July 3 due to the Independence Day Celebration.  All events are held at Kingsburg Memorial Park on the corner of Sierra Street & 18th Avenue.  Food vendors and fun begin at 5pm, concerts begin at 8pm.

American Independence

The annual Kingsburg Independence Day celebration is just two weeks away.  Held on July 3 at Kingsburg High School, come out for an old fashioned patriotic festival.

Food and fun for all ages starts at 6pm.  The fireworks begin after dusk.  Tickets are available at the door the day of the event:

See you all there!
