This Week in Kingsburg History
On June 6,1908, the 1st Kingsburg High School graduation ceremony was held at the Mission Church (now Evangelical Covenant).  The "Green And The Gold" school song, written by the four graduates, was sung.

Information provided by resident Ronald Bergman.  Have some Kingsburg history to submit?  Send us a note.

This Week in History
Although the term D-Day is used routinely as military lingo for the day an operation or event will take place, for many it is also synonymous with June 6, 1944, the day the Allied powers crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control during World War II.  By the end of June, the Allies had 850,000 men and 150,000 vehicles in Normandy and were poised to continue their march across Europe.
Music Under the Stars
The City's summer band concert series opener is just around the corner! Held on Thursday nights, visitors can enjoy music, food and fun with neighbors.  2014 dates include:
  • June 19 & 26
  • July 10,17, 24 & 31

Note there will be no concert on July 3 due to the Independence Day Celebration.  All events are held at Kingsburg Memorial Park on the corner of Sierra Street & 18th Avenue.  Concerts begin at 8pm.

Mid Valley Transition
As many are aware, Mid-Valley Disposal will be taking over garbage, recycling and green waste collections for the City.

Mid Valley employees and City staff are working quickly to ensure the transition is seamless for all residents involved.  Residents will soon be receiving a letter from Mid Valley in the mail that outlines key dates and expectations for new container delivery.

Residents are also encouraged to check out the frequently asked questions document online.  Those with additional questions are encouraged to contact Alex Henderson.
Boom
It's hard to believe, but it's already June!  That means that the annual Independence Day Celebration is just around the corner.

The annual event includes fireworks, food and fun for all ages!  Held on Thursday, July 3 at the Kingsburg High School Stadium Bowl, the event starts at 6pm.  Tickets for the event are sold at the door:
  • $5 adults

  • $3 children (ages 3 to 13)

  • Free for children under 3

Save the date and we'll see you on the 3rd!

Construction Season
As we enter the months of summer, residents will start to notice another summer event - road construction.  Construction in Kingsburg is already well underway with the City currently working on the reconstruction of 20th Avenue south of Sierra St.  This work will also include the reconstruction of the cross streets in the same neighborhood (Riverside, Plumas, Lindquist).

In addition, Tulare County is currently reconstructing Mendicino (18th Ave.)/SR99 overpass.  This work will occur mostly at night, but residents can expect some delays when traveling in this area.
Budget Watch

During their June 4 regularly scheduled meeting, the City Council heard the first reading of the proposed FY14-15 City budget.  Residents can find a copy of the proposed budget located online for review.  Some highlights include:

  • Budget based upon adopted strategic plan process
  • No new fees or rate increases for City services
  • 14 capital improvement projects (road construction, bike lanes, Train Depot, etc.)
  • Newly implemented garbage, recycling and green waste contract
  • Improved fund balances through expenditure restraint

The Council will take action on an adopted budget during their regularly scheduled meeting on June 18.
