Quote of the Week
This Week in History
On May 27, 1943, a B-24 carrying U.S. airman and former Olympic runner Louis "Louie" Zamperini crashes into the Pacific Ocean. After surviving the crash, Zamperini floated on a raft in shark-infested waters for more than a month before being picked up by the Japanese and spending the next two years in a series of brutal prison camps. Zamperini grew up in Torrance, California, and at age 19, competed for the United States at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany.
Mid Valley Letter
As many are aware, Mid-Valley Disposal will be taking over garbage, recycling and green waste collections for the City.

Mid Valley employees and City staff are working quickly to ensure the transition is seamless for all residents involved.  Residents will soon be receiving a letter from Mid Valley in the mail that outlines key dates and expectations for new container delivery.

Residents are also encouraged to check out the frequently asked questions document online.  Those with additional questions are encouraged to contact Alex Henderson.
Rafer Johnson Day
The City Council will hold a special meeting on Friday morning at 9am to honor Kingsburg hero Rafer Lewis Johnson.  Johnson, a decorated Olympic athlete, has called Kingsburg "home" since he moved here at the age of five.

Each year, Rafer returns to the Junior High School named in his honor to hand out diplomas to graduating eighth graders.  With Junior High graduation commencing next week, the Council will consider a proclamation naming June 4, 2014 as Rafer Lewis Johnson Day.
Farmer Fresh
Don't forget that the Kingsburg Farmers Market is held every Thursday night during the summer!  The Market runs from 5-9pm and is held at Coffee Pot Park.

Come out to check out local fruits, crafts, cheeses, and other organic items.  Mingle with neighbors and friends while you shop locally.
Utility Billing Update

For security purposes and fraud prevention, the City will no longer accept utility bill payments over the phone beginning on July 1, 2014.  Residents still have the option to pay their utility bills in the following ways:

Residents paying online or in person who utilize a credit card will NOT be charged any additional fees.  A reminder that utility payments are due on the 19th of each month.

Watch the Water
Governor Jerry Brown has asked all Californians to reduce water consumption by 20%.  Currently, the City has deployed several water saving measures:
  • Water meter installations (currently underway)
  • Limited watering of detention ponds
  • Higher enforcement of illegal outdoor watering
  • Increased communication regarding conservation techniques

You can help at home by monitoring you and your neighbors watering habits.  There are specific rules governing watering, including water waste of sprinkler heads facing sidewalk and street areas.  To report illegal watering, contact City Hall during business hours, or the police department non-emergency number after hours.
