Quote of the Week
"Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out."

 ~John Wooden

This Week in History
On May 23, 1934, notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death by Texas and Louisiana state police while driving a stolen car near Sailes, Louisiana.. Their fame was increased by the fact that Bonnie was a woman--an unlikely criminal--and by the fact that the couple posed for playful photographs together, which were later found by police and released to the media. All told, the Barrow Gang was believed responsible for the deaths of 13 people, including nine police officers.
Mid Valley Disposal
During last night's meeting the City Council voted to approve a contract with Mid-Valley Disposal to take over garbage, recycling and green waste collections for the City beginning July 1.

The existing contract with Waste Management is set to expire at the end of June, and the City requested formal proposals from qualified haulers in early April.  The proposal received from Mid-Valley offers the same service residents are currently receiving, and residential rates will not change.  In addition, it provides financial stability for the City, as well as residential and commercial accounts.

The council did strike language that would have provided exclusive roll off service to Mid Valley.  The City will be working to develop a program to help monitor diversion created from roll off business, as required by State law. Those with questions are encouraged to contact Alex Henderson.
Welcome Chief
During their May 22 meeting, the City Council swore in Mr. Drew Bessinger to the position of interim Police Chief.  Mr. Bessinger brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience, 22 of which were spent with the City of Clovis, where he retired as a Captain.

With a bachelors degree in Public Administration and several certificates from California POST, he brings great experience with community based policing and we're excited to have him on board as we begin the recruitment process for a full-time replacement. Please help us to welcome Drew to Kingsburg.
Finding the Way
Did you know that often times during an emergency, police or fire crews need to access properties through the alleyway.  Unfortunately, many properties are not properly marked, which can waste precious seconds and minutes for emergency crews attempting to locate the home.

Make sure you take time to place large (3''), reflective lettering on your back fence, or a visible location so our crews can assist in a time of need.
A Big Thank You
A big thank you to all who helped make this year's Swedish Festival a great success.  From the Farmers Market on Thursday, the Smorgasbord on Friday, to the Dala Trot, Pancake breakfast and Parade on Saturday - residents and visitors turned out to enjoy this great annual tradition.

One of the largest events, the Saturday morning pancake breakfast, served over 1,850 plates from 6-10am.  A big thank you to all of the City's service groups, and the Chamber of Commerce,  all who helped contribute to the success of the weekend.

We'll see you all next year!
Outdoor Opportunities

The City Council approved an amended outdoor dining ordinance during their May 22 meeting.  The amended ordinance allows for the qualified establishments to provide outdoor dining opportunities, including the sale of beer and/or wine, on public sidewalks or alleyways.
Any interested establishment would need to complete a permit process, and to comply with the ordinance, which specifies:

  • Hours of operation
  • Location
  • Insurance requirements

With a full permitting process, each potential outdoor site will be examined by City staff before being approved.  The City Council will also review and approve a formal permit prior to any establishments applying.
