On May 8, 1954, in a major civil rights victory, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down an unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public educational facilities is unconstitutional. The historic decision, which brought an end to federal tolerance of racial segregation, specifically dealt with Linda Brown, a young African American girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, because of the color of her skin.

During their May 13 meeting, the City Council voted to enter negotiations with Mid-Valley Disposal to take over garbage, recycling and green waste collections for the City beginning July 1.
The existing contract with Waste Management is set to expire at the end of June, and the City requested formal proposals from qualified haulers in early April. The proposal received from Mid-Valley offers the same service residents are currently receiving, as well as a number of value-added options. In addition, it provides financial stability for the City, as well as residential and commercial accounts.
The formal agreement is anticipated to be heard and voted on at the May 22 meeting, held at 7pm. Residents can view a new frequently asked questions document related to the process. Those with additional questions or clarifications are encouraged to contact City Hall or email Alex Henderson. |
