Quote of the Week
"I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past."

-- Thomas Jefferson

This Week in History
On April 8, 1974, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves hits his 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth's legendary record of 714 homers. A crowd of 53,775 people, the largest in the history of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, was with Aaron that night to cheer when he hit a 4th inning pitch off the Los Angeles Dodgers' Al Downing.
Chief Dunn Retiring

In a press release this week, Police Chief Jeff Dunn announced he will retire from duty on May 19, 2014.

Dunn joined the Kingsburg Police Department in 1986 as a reserve officer. He was hired as a full-time officer in 1988. He served as a K-9 officer, sergeant and lieutenant at Kingsburg PD and was promoted to chief in 2005. His entire career in law enforcement has been in Kingsburg.

The city is starting an immediate search for an interim chief and then will launch a recruitment process for a permanent new chief of police.

In the Line of Duty
On the evening of April 9, KPD responded to a 911 call related to a home invasion.  Officers responding to the call began a search after the armed intruder fled the initial scene.  After a short chase, the suspect was discovered and apprehended on the Kingsburg High School property.  KPD also recovered the weapon the suspect was carrying.

KPD would like to extend its thanks to the Fresno County Sheriffs Dept. for their assistance in apprehending the suspect.
Cars, Cars, Cars
We'll see you at the 20th Annual Car Show, which starts next Friday night.  Visitors should head to Draper Street to take advantage of a number of events:
  • Cruise night & 50/50 Raffle (Friday, April 18)

  • KFD Spaghetti Dinner; Friday 5:00-7:00pm ($10 tickets available at KFD and City Hall)
  • Saturday morning Pancake Breakfast ($4 tickets available at the Senior Center)
  • Car Judging on Saturday

All this plus great food and shopping on Draper provide a great chance to get out and enjoy the show!

Water Meter Project
As many residents are aware of, the City is completing a water meter installation project as required by the State of California.

To date, meters have been installed at 690 homes, or 38% of the total amount to be installed, with only  23.5% of the overall budget expended.  The savings is due to City water employees assisting with locating the service lines to keep the project moving smoothly.  Crews are currently working in the Tulare & Union alley and then moving to Tulare & Sierra alley. After that the crews will be moving to 18th, 19th, 20th streets.

Remember, with the continuing drought in California, do your part to conserve.  A little now will go a long way in the future.

Cleaning Season
The Spring Community Clean Up is happening later this month.  There are a number of days you can take advantage of the event, held at 1200 Kern Street. The event days run from April 28 - May 10, with times for each day as follows:
  • Monday - Friday; 7:00am - 4:00pm
  • Saturday (May 3 & 10); 7:00am - 2:30pm
  • Closed Sundays
Residents will have the chance to dispose of a number of items - making sure they are all properly disposed of.  While you're busy cleaning out for the Clean Up - set aside those items that can be donated and stop by Kcaps on your way.
