AHA UPDATE
AHA QUARTERLY COMMUNITY MEETINGS
AHA Spring Quarterly Community Meeting
Aurora Mental Health Center hosted AHA's Spring Quarterly Community Meeting in their auditorium at the new Crisis Walk-In Center. With 56 attendees, it was one of the largest meetings so far. Diane Brunson, CU School of Dental Medicine, not only gave a rousing presentation on how oral health is critical to overall health, but she taught us all how much toothpaste we really need to use! We also learned that the group most likely NOT to have dental insurance is those 65 and over.
We introduced a new format during this meeting -- the "Did You Know?" Panel. This format, consisting of mini-presentations from three presenters, allows AHA to provide a more diverse mix of information and resources, which better matches the diversity of AHA's membership. The three inaugural presenters included Camy Bell, Burn Center UC Hospital; Arthur McFarlane, The Breathing Institute, Children's Hospital; and Keven Waters, Aurora Fire Department. Did you know that:
- "Wax" is another name for hash oil, and that its street value is currently worth more than gold?
- People don't "grow out of" asthma?
- That kids can get their immunizations and check out a fire engine at the same time?
Thank you to all the presenters and participants who made it a dynamic and informational meeting!
Looking forward: July Quarterly Community Meeting. If you haven't attended one of our Quarterly Community Meetings yet, please attend to see why it keeps growing! The summer Quarterly Community Meeting is Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at Children's Hospital. Please mark your calendars. We'll see you then!
Annual Survey Results. Thank you to the 38 people who completed the survey during the Quarterly Meeting. Thanks to your input we learned that: - For 15 of you, this was your first Quarterly Community Meeting. We hope to see you again!
- In order of preference, you said you come to our meetings for the AHA updates, to learn from our presenters, to hear the community announcements, to network with colleagues (old and new), and to share your news.
- While you enjoy our presentations, you want us to keep them short. You liked the format of the Did You Know? Panel presentations, and want speakers to provide handouts.
- You suggested we offer coffee and tea, provide more time for networking, and that we get LinkedIn.
- You also shared some great ideas for topics, speakers, and locations. Thank you!

The Healthcare Academy
Health Care Leadership Institute
By Maisha Fields
The City of Aurora is home to the finest medical facilities and most skilled healthcare providers in Colorado. In spite of the fact that Anschutz Health Science Campus is responsible for more than 36,000 jobs that provide a living wage, youth and families living in vulnerable conditions sometimes have limited access to career attainment and advancement.
In order to improve the overall quality of life, educational attainment, and economic security of families and youth living in North Aurora, the Fields Foundation, in partnership with representatives from the Metro Denver Health Care Partnership, Community College of Aurora, and Aurora Public School District Aurora Lights Pathway Program, created North Aurora's first community-based Health Care Leadership Institute.
The curriculum is designed to guide youth-aged learners on the competencies needed for entry-level healthcare and IT support staff in a variety of healthcare settings. The program culminates with a formal graduation ceremony and job placement fair held on the campus of Anschutz Medical Center. This partnership has graduated and successfully placed 76 youth of color from the Aurora community in jobs or post-secondary settings!
While grabbing a bite to eat at the hospital cafeteria at Children's Hospital recently, I ran into a graduate of the Health Care Academy. The student rushed up to me in scrubs with a brilliant smile. She didn't say much but "Thank you, I can't believe I really work here!"
Classes in Health Information Technology or Certified Nursing Assistant are starting soon, so please contact the Fields Foundation at 720-505-2795 or fieldshealthcareinstitute@gmail.com for more information.
