Down Syndrome Family Group Visits the Circus
Barnum & Bailey Circus Animal Care Event was a huge success.
The Down Syndrome Family Group enjoyed an up close look at the animals of the Barnum & Bailey Circus at a very special animal care event. Families were able to pet a miniature horse, try on event costumes, and play with the circus props. "The all time favorite part of the night was when the big ol' elephant came out. The kids were in awe.  All the families got to take pictures with it and we also got to pet it" said Down Syndrome Family Group parent, Tracy Nelms. "They really made us all feel special and at the end of it all, they gave us tickets to attend the show. So we did, and we got to see our new friends perform on stage. It was an excellent experience for the whole family."

New SETX Self Advocate officers elected.
The Southeast Texas Self Advocates strive to help people with disabilities embrace life and advocate for their own rights and interest by making their own decisions and choosing services and supports that allow them to live the way they want to live. Every other year, the group elects officers that will represent them while visiting with legislators.  Self advocate officers are given training on how to speak up for themselves and for others in the group at the Texas Advocates annual conference, the officers then bring this knowledge to each and every self advocate meeting.  The newly elected SETX Self Advocate officers are as follows: President, Brandon Pharris; Vice President, Rebecca Alford; Secretary, Katie Sheffield; Treasurer, Shane Henry; Chaplin, Sara Leonard.  We look forward to the great things these new officers will bring to the group.  For more information on the SETX Self Advocates click here
