2013 Beaumont Buddy Walk a Huge Success!

Over 2,000 people came to the Beaumont Event Center on Saturday, October 26th in support of Down Syndrome Awareness.   There were dancing bananas, cheerleaders, drill teams, student groups, friends, and families."Our goal for the Beaumont Buddy Walk is to make everyone aware that our children are the same as every other child.  They may take a little longer to learn things but at the end of the day, the love they show everyone is the sweetest love a person can ever imagine" says Buddy Walk Co-Chair Tracy Nelms. The 2013 Beaumont Buddy Walk raised over $75,000 for Down syndrome research and awareness as well as services provided by The Arc of Greater Beaumont.  To check out pictures from this amazing event visit the Arc's photo gallery page. A special thanks to all the team captains and volunteers who helped put this event together.  The Beaumont Buddy Walk would not have been possible without all your hard work and dedication.  We can't wait for next year's event to be even bigger and better!

 autism NOW  Fact Sheets

Autism NOW is a wonderful resource for information on autism and autism services.  One benefit of the autism NOW online center is the development of Autism Fact Sheets.  Fact sheets range from information on IEP's, planning for the future, relationships & sexuality, to information for self advocates on employment. Not only are these fact sheets available, but they can be found in several different languages to ensure everyone has access to information they may need.  Autism NOW currently offers these fact sheets in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Self Advocates Send Cards to Wounded Soldiers
The Southeast Texas Self Advocates have made a commitment to  educate themselves on how to be independent, how to advocate for their rights, and how to give back to their community.  This year, as a community service project, the Self Advocates wrote and sent holiday cards to wounded soldiers through the American Red Cross Holiday Cards for Heroes project.  "I hope that my cards make the soldiers feel better" said self advocate Kara Paskell.  The holiday cards used for this project were created and designed by adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities through the Arc's Holiday Cards for a Cause Project.

The Arc of the United States Survey for Caregivers
Survey of Caregivers Seeks Information about Health and People with Disabilities
The Arc's HealthMeet initiative, which aims to reduce health disparities among people with I/DD, is launching a short, internet-based survey for family or staff caregivers of people with intellectual disabilities. This survey asks questions about health status of people with intellectual disabilities in different areas that are noticed by caregivers but can also be used as a checklist to help caregivers identify red flags about the health of the person you care for. The survey takes about 15 minutes and is free of charge. Take the survey now and please share with your networks of those who provide care for people with I/DD either professionally or as a family member.
