May 19, 2013 - Beryl Samia Sunday
Beryl Designated "Organist Emeritus"This past Sunday was a special day for our retiring organist Beryl Samia. Beryl was prepared for her usual Sunday duties as well as the afternoon Appreciation Concert. Little did she know that there were surprises embedded within the day's scheduled activities.
Surprise #1: During the service, Tom Bradbury called her up to the lectern and presented her with a plaque designating her as our Organist Emeritus. You can view that presentation here.
Appreciation Concert:
Our Trinity Trio -Beryl, Susan LaVerriere and Nancy Chamberlin - had been rehearsing for several weeks in preparation for Beryl's Appreciation Concert. The music was classic Beryl, the spirit was classic Trinity Trio and the memories were classic Church on the Cape! CDs and a video of the entire concert (DVD) will be available this Sunday. See Bill Lord.
Surprise #2: The choir had been secretly rehearsing a Flash Mob event for the concert. A somewhat confused look swept over Beryl's face as the opening bars of "Amazing Grace" were played and the choir, scattered about the audience, began to stand and sing. You could almost see her saying to herself, "What is this? This isn't in the program!" Needless to say, Beryl's face lit up with joy as the choir's serenade gained momentum.
Here are four selections from the concert:
The Dinner
Surprise #3: The church then put on a fabulous dinner for Beryl and Jerry at the American Legion Hall (175 attendees). The food was scrumptious. But another secret effort was about to unfold.
Unbeknownst to Beryl, members of the choir had video recorded their insights about her skills as a choir director.
Some of those present had to buckle up their seat belts to prevent from rolling on the floor with laughter. You can view the video here. (It is not available to the general public. Only those who have this address and can view it...thus protecting the innocent.)
We do know how to celebrate! Congratulations Beryl on your outstanding music ministry at our church.
