MAP Testing 101
Greenwood Elementary recently completed its fall Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing, and I wanted to share more about these growth-based tests. "MAP assessments are adaptive achievement tests that are taken on a computer. This means that the difficulty of a test is adjusted to a student's performance so each student sees different test questions. The difficulty of each question is based on how well the student has answered the questions up to that point. As the student answers correctly, the questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. The computer adjusts the difficulty of the questions so that each student takes a unique test. The scale NWEA uses to measure a student's progress is called the RIT scale, short for Rasch Unit. The RIT scale is an equal-interval scale much like centimeters on a meter-stick. It is used to chart a student's academic growth from year to year (NWEA.org, 2012)."
Your child's individual MAP RIT scores will be posted to Skyward's Family Access this week along with a national percentile rank. Please click HERE for a letter from our district's Director of Research and Assessment, Dr. Stacey Lachner, and to read directions on locating the test on Family Access. The primary purposes of MAP testing are to identify a student's instructional level, as a benchmark to predict how they will do on the year-end state assessment, identify students who are at risk of being non-proficient and need additional support, and to measure their growth across the school year or over multiple years. MAP can give you some insight into relative strengths and weaknesses for groups of students, but it is not a diagnostic test.
As your partners in education, we share this information with you because it is one data point we use to make decisions about student learning. Along with the MAP test, teachers use daily formative assessments, one-on-one and small group assessments, unit tests, observations of children in the classroom and your input to maximize learning students. Thanks for all you do to support your child as they grow here at Greenwood!
Best Regards,
Mr. Brad Gustafson

Innisbrook Results Are In
|
This year Greenwood sold $33,885 worth of Innisbrook products. Our goal was $28,000 which was easily met thanks to the many families who participated and supported the cause. Our school receives over $15,000 of those sales! Wow!! All of your kids deserve a big pat on the back for an amazing start to the year! Thank You!!
Thanks also to the families that chose not to sell gift wrap but gave monetary donations to the fundraiser. All of that money goes directly to our school to fund amazing programs and we received some very generous donations!
Congratulations to our Top Sellers:
- Mya Rasmussen, Mrs. Golfis' 1st Grade Class ($1,236 in sales)
- Lauren Lubenow, Mrs. Iliff's 5th Grade Class ($1,126 in sales
- J.P. Kirchner, Mrs. Westman's Kindergarten Class ($623 in sales)
All three have earned admission to the MONEY MACHINE at the October 17 character assembly for a chance to grab a handful of cash. Congratulations also to Ethan Rudnick (of Mrs. Scheurman's 4th grade class) whose name was chosen from a random drawing of all participating students (sellers and donors combined). Ethan has won time in the MONEY MACHINE as well at the assembly.
Congratulations to Mrs. Iliff's 5th graders for being the top selling class with total sales of $2,479! Wow!! You have definitely earned your Jimmy John's class party*.
Remember to mark your calendars for pick-up Monday, November 5, between 3:30-7pm at Greenwood. Quick and efficient curbside pick-up service will be offered again this year. Reminder/pick-up slips will be sent home with your child as pick-up day approaches.
*Special thanks to the Albert family for donating the Jimmy John's sub party to the top selling classroom. We can't wait to feed those hungry 5th graders their Jimmy John's!

You do NOT need to be an experienced teacher or artistic! If you would like more information regarding PIA, please click HERE or contact Michelle Cherne at mmcherne@gmail.com.
