Davis co-directs sold out KSU theatre production

Last month's production, Bloody Pulp, Crisis in the American Comic Book was a sold-out performance.

Co-directed by Jim Davis and Charlie Parrot, both associate professors of Theatre and Performance Studios, the play told the story of the rise and fall of the comics industry in the early 1950s.

"Working on an original script is always challenging. However, I was lucky to have a generous, skilled collaborator in Dr. Parrot, great designers and stage managers, and a smart, funny and talented cast of 14 students," said Davis.

Both Davis and Parrot were interviewed about the production on WABE. Read more.
Selma-to-Montgomery march a success

Nearly 50 KSU students attended the 50th Anniversary ceremonies for the 1965
Selma-to- Montgomery march reenactment (also known as Bloody Sunday).

Accompanied by four facilitators, Yen Rodriguez (trip organizer), Linda Lyons, Loretta Daniels and Shelbee Nguyen, the students participated in outdoor activities and speeches, which included an address from President Obama.

During the course of the trip, students were able to visit Selma and its authentic surroundings, interact with locals and individuals who were present during the original march in 1965, and meet students from other universities and colleges who traveled across the country to be in attendance.

Lodged at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Tuskegee University, students took advantage of the opportunity to visit the campus and the monuments dedicated to both George Washington Carver and Booker T. Washington.

GuramatunhuCooper supervises directed studies with Leadership students
Nyasha M. GuramatunhuCooper, assistant professor of Leadership Studies, is supervising a directed study with senior communication and leadership certificate student, Alicia Whittle. GuramatunhuCooper and Whittle designed the directed study, LDRS 4400: Leadership Development and Practice as a practicum to complement course work completed toward the leadership certificate program. The team also received IRB approval to conduct a case study titled "Leadership Development and Practice: A Narrative of Peer Mentorship and Leadership."

The purpose of the study is to examine how experiences as a leadership studies peer mentor and student-athlete mold or influence Whittle's leadership development and practice.

Whittle will be presenting her work at the KSU Scholarship Symposium on April 16.

Additionally, several of GuramatunhuCooper's students in LDRS 3000: Foundations of Leadership will be presenting at the same symposium. The students, paired in groups, will be doing oral and visual presentations under the theme "Depictions of Leadership in the Media."

FYTS and Global Affairs announce study abroad program

Todd Harper, associate professor of English, approached the Department of First-Year and Transition Studies seeking to partner with University College to create study abroad opportunities for first-year students.  Over the course of several weeks, the department collaborated with Harper to explore options and develop a course offerings that would meet the needs of first-year students while giving them the opportunity to spend several weeks studying abroad in Montepulciano, Italy.

Students who choose this option will take four classes during their first semester at KSU.  They will have two semester-long classes -- an online WEL 1000 class and ENGL 1101 that begins on campus and continues in Italy.  Their other two courses will be seven-week sections -- a first-year seminar course (KSU 1111) that will be offered on campus the first seven weeks of the semester and a political science class that will be conducted during the second half of the semester in Italy.

Ruth Goldfine, department of First-Year and Transition Studies chair, states, "I have long wanted to involve the FYTS Department in offering study abroad opportunities for our first-year students in a meaningful way that supports the mission of our department.  I believe the study abroad opportunity we have developed will allow students the opportunity to both connect with the institution yet enjoy the benefits of study abroad early in their academic careers."
Learning communities celebrate happiness at KSU

Students in the "Pursuit of Happiness" learning communities celebrated International Happiness Day last week by planning and hosting KSU Recess and by participating in a photojournalism project called "Finding Happiness at KSU." Both events highlighted the importance of savoring life's little joys in order to elevate one's general sense of well-being and happiness.

KSU Recess offered students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to indulge in some old-fashioned fun on the Campus Green. That fun came in the form of frisbees, hula hoops, and bright yellow happy face cupcakes.

For the photojournalism project, students documented landscapes and scenes at KSU that make them feel happy or generate positive feelings. Some of  the photographs are displayed electronically on the social media sites Facebook and Twitter. A temporary exhibit of the "Finding Happiness at KSU" photos is housed on the first floor of the University College Building.

The learning community instructional team consists of Cheryl ThrashHillary SteinerCathy Bradford and Dee Grindell
