Grand Opening Celebration of the Doris Griffin Senior One Stop Center

Doris Griffin Speaks to Reporter

A grand opening celebration of the Doris Griffin Senior One Stop Center took place on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, and was attended by more than 160 people.

Dignitaries, city and state leaders, senior advocates and WellMed staff honored Ms. Griffin for her years of championing senior issues.

The Doris Griffin Senior One Stop is a public/private partnership between the City of San Antonio and the non-profit WellMed Charitable Foundation, founded by Dr. George Rapier III.   The center is named in honor of the longtime senior advocate Doris Griffin, a member of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature since 1991, and Director of the non-profit Jefferson Area Outreach for Older Persons, an organization dedicated to providing assistance and transportation to homebound seniors and helping seniors access social services, as well as providing  volunteer opportunities for older adults in our community.

To learn more about Jefferson Area Outreach for Older Persons and how you may volunteer to drive a senior to a medical appointment, please call (210) 734-5016.

The Big Give S.A. is a 24-hour day of giving that will take place from midnight to midnight on May 5, 2015.

Represented will be hundreds of local nonprofits, over a dozen counties and a cause to fit your passion.

The purpose of this community-wide giving challenge is to increase public awareness of the impact local nonprofits make in addressing our community's social challenges, bring nonprofits and donors together, expand the idea of online giving, connect people to the causes that move them the most and, of course, make giving FUN.

Last year's event raised over $2,000,000 for 467 participating agencies!  The Big Give S.A. is part of the national day of giving called Give Local America.
