Top 5 Transferable Skills Reservists Bring to Corporate Canada
|
At the launch event, Don Ludlow, President of Treble Victor Group (3V) Toronto and Vice President of Commercial Banking at RBC and Colonel Patrick Kelly, Director Reserves with the Canadian Armed Forces, spoke to the benefits of hiring people with a military background, listing the numerous qualities and skills that reservists bring the workforce. These are their top five:

- Leadership: Reservists are given substantial leadership training that prepares them for any type of situation, and to take the initiative to solve problems. Reservists also gain experience leading teams, which translates well to personnel management in a corporate environment.
- Teamwork: Leading teams is certainly a strong skill for reservists, but being part of a team and focusing on that team's success is even more important. Reservists also acquire experience with mentoring and coaching to ensure that their fellow reservists are performing to their highest potential, and that nobody is left behind.
- Decisiveness: The ability to analyze complex situations is a skill that is ingrained in reservists; their mental agility also enables them make decisions with limited information, and get the job done.
- Accountability: Reservists are held to very high standards and are expected to hit their target objectives. A reservist will never let you down.
- Loyalty: Above all else - Ludlow stated - reservists have "the ability and desire to work in high performing teams." Once they are given the chance to join the civilian workforce, their loyalty to that team is palpable and will contribute to the long-term success of an organization.
As Colonel Kelly pointed out, reservists have all of these transferable skills by the time they enter the workforce. This significant investment in training reservists is one that employers should take advantage of by playing an active role in hiring reservists, and giving them a chance to demonstrate their potential.
